The New York Yankees may have breathed a sigh of relief after clinching a wild-card victory over the Boston Red Sox, keeping their dreams of a World Series run alive.
But that relief quickly evaporated following their defeat to the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Division Series, shifting the focus back to the drawing board: rebuilding the roster and reigniting championship hopes. Fans, as always, are eyeing the possibility of a blockbuster trade with an American League rival.
The Detroit Tigers faced a similar fate this postseason, bowing out in the ALDS. During the season-ending press conference, team president Scott Harris was asked whether reigning Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal might be on the move this winter, as he enters his final year of arbitration eligibility.
“I can’t comment on players being traded,” Harris said, according to Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press. “He’s an incredible pitcher. We’re lucky to have him. That’s all I can say.”
While Harris declined to speculate, his comments signaled that the Tigers would only consider parting with Skubal for an exceptional package. FanSided’s Christopher Kline recently suggested such a deal: sending Yankees prospects George Lombard Jr., Spencer Jones, Bryce Cunningham, and Henry Lalane to Detroit in exchange for Skubal.
“The Yankees would need to empty the entire clip for Tarik Skubal, even on an expiring contract,” Kline wrote, “but imagine the rotation: Skubal, Gerrit Cole, and Max Fried leading the charge. That’s a nightmare for any opponent, especially if Cole returns to his pre-injury form.”
With Detroit holding firm for now, any Yankees pursuit of their ace would require an offer impossible to refuse. But if New York is ready to mortgage its farm system, they could be poised to field the most fearsome pitching staff in baseball next season.
