In a segment leading up to Tuesday night’s elections, MSNBC host Rachel Maddow detailed just how unpopular Donald Trump is with the American people.
“Donald Trump has never been more unpopular than he is right now,” Maddow declared, explaining that his disapproval rating is “higher than it was in the immediate aftermath of January 6th.”

“After Jan. 6, a whopping 62% of Americans said they disapproved of Trump,” she said. “Today, the number of Americans who say they disapprove of Donald Trump is not 62%. It is 63%!”
“Only 37% approve of Trump. That means right now, he is 26 points underwater in terms of his approval rating with the American people.”
“That’s astonishing.”
Citing an ABC/Washington Post Poll, Maddow added that “Americans disapprove of him on everything,” from his handling of Israel and Gaza (minus 6 points) to his approach to crime (minus 11 points) to his immigration policies (minus 13 points) to his handling of foreign relations (minus 19 points) to the economy (minus 25 points) to the handling of the Russia-Ukraine War (minus 21 points) to his management of the federal government (minus 27 points) to his tariffs (minus 32 points).”
The poll also found that 57% of Americans believe ICE agents should not be allowed to wear masks, compared to 41% who say they should. Americans also overwhelmingly object to the president sending in the National Guard to states where the governor has objected.
Additionally, 48% of Americans say Trump has made America weaker, compared to 33% who feel he has made it stronger.
The list of Trump hits goes on, from anger over his decision to tear down the White House East Wing for a ballroom to disapproval over his prosecution of James Comey and John Bolton. 64% of Americans also oppose the president’s claim that the Department of Justice owes him $230 million, while 21% support it.
Maddow also cited an NBC poll that asked, “Do you consider yourself to be a supporter of the No Kings protest movement?” and was dumbfounded by the “absolutely stunning response.”
43% said yes, which she said “means not only does the base of support for the No Kings movement absolutely dwarf the base of support for MAGA in this country, but in absolute terms it also means that support for the No Kings movement against Trump, it’s just huge.”
“I mean 43% of this country,” she mused. “That’s 147 million people. I think we’re gonna need a bigger boat.”
In contrast, 30% said they support the MAGA movement, and Maddow added that number has been “dropping hard since Trump has been back in office.”
She implored business leaders to consider whether bowing down to Trump is still a good idea.
“Take a little temperature of the public here, guys. You’re aligning yourself with something pretty radically and deeply unpopular.”
She also sarcastically asked what Trump is doing to “make himself more palatable to the American people,” pointing out that he cut off SNAP benefits for millions of Americans while hosting a lavish Great Gatsby-themed party.
The numbers no doubt explain what happened in Tuesday night’s elections, where Democrats swept in races across the country.
The November 4 off-year elections saw Democrats annihilate their Republican and independent opponents in everything from gubernatorial and mayoral races to judicial retention votes to state legislative elections to commission races, as well as in a historic, unprecedented ballot measure.
Analysts have said the Democrats could not have had a better night, as candidates across the country not only won their elections but, in many cases, made history. And in many races, Democrats won by such large margins that news organizations declared winners within minutes of polls closing.
