Sandy Kelly was in tears tonight as she was presented with a huge Late Late Show honour.
The country icon was inducted into the Irish Country Music Hall of Fame during the Late Late Show’s country special.
She held back tears when she was surprised with the honour during the show, with a montage of her incredible career shown as she was presented with the trophy.
Speaking to host Patrick Kielty, Sandy said: “Oh my goodness, I feel like I’ve won the Eurovision.
“I couldn’t understand why they were bringing in all the lights [backstage]. I’m shaking. It’s very emotional, because it’s such an honour to be recognised by everybody. I didn’t expect it.”
She added: “I want to dedicate it to all the people who’ve followed me over 50 years, and I want to dedicate it to my family and all of my peers. I can’t believe this, it’s just unbelievable. Thank you so much everybody.”
Sandy was joined by fellow Hall of Fame inductees Declan Nerney, Susan McCann, Philomena Begley and Daniel O’Donnell on the programme tonight, and gave them a hug as she joined them in studio.
They spoke about their impressive careers, with Daniel addressing the fact he would be stepping away from touring for a little while. When Patrick asked what he would be doing, Daniel said that as well as playing shows he has lined up, he hopes to play more bridge.
Patrick had the guests in stitches when he replied: “Are you good at the bridge? I always heard bridge was like sex, you either need a good partner or a good hand.”
The guests were left shocked and in stitches by the hosts x-rated quip.
