Stephen Colbert’s Shocking Confession: Is This the Week We’ve Truly Hit Rock Bottom?.th

During his opening monologue for the October 30th episode of The Late Show, Stephen Colbert admitted that “we may have hit rock bottom this week.”

The talk show host was discussing the dictionary.com word of the year, which is “6 7,” a popular term among Generation Alpha, popularized on TikTok. The term has no definitive meaning.

Colbert said to his live audience, “We may have hit rock bottom this week, because dictionary.com has picked the term six-seven as the 2025 word of the year. Mm-mm. No. Word of the year has to be a word, not numbers. Okay?”

The audience burst into laughter as he continued, “Some things can’t be numbers. This is worse than when Playboy announced their Playmate of the year was 8.” He then gave his best guess at what the term means. He explained to viewers that anytime the numbers six, seven, or “any number at all” appear, Gen Alpha will begin to say the term “6 7” in response.

“As in, ‘what time do you get off work?’ ‘6 7.’ Or, ‘how many cookies did you eat?’ ‘6-7’,” he joked. “On a scale of one to ten, how dumb does Stephen feel explaining this? 6 7.” He also explained that the term originated from the song DootDoot(67) by the rapper Skrilla.

Fans reacted to the hysterical moment on social media, with one saying, “Rock bottom? No we still have 3 more years, of [Trump].”

“Colbert, sir, where do we go from here?” another hopeless viewer joked.

“I am a high school teacher and between the students peppering my ceiling with post it darts and saying 6-7 any time something vaguely relates to numbers. I cannot retire soon enough,” another commented.

Someone else chimed in, “I show my students the clip from Jimmy Fallon with all the anchors using it hoping they’d think it’s cringe. Nope! They loved! They thought it was just so cool that EVERYONE is using it. So yea we are stuck with it. For maybe 6-7 years.”

This lighthearted segment comes just months after CBS announced that The Late Show will end its run in May 2026 and that the network will retire the entire Late Show franchise.

According to the network’s statement, the decision was “purely…financial against a challenging backdrop in late night,” despite ongoing political tension between late-night television and the Trump administration.

CBS emphasized that the cancellation was “not related in any way to the show’s performance, content, or other matters happening at Paramount.”

During the show’s July 17 taping, Stephen Colbert told the audience that he had learned of the decision only the previous night. He said, “It’s not just the end of our show, but it’s the end of The Late Show on CBS. I’m not being replaced. This is all just going away.”
