Shooter Jennings has seemingly confirmed that a Waylon Jennings documentary is on the way.

The year 2025 has been great for fans of the late, great country music outlaw Waylon Jennings. Thanks to Waylon’s son, Shooter, the country music world was gifted with a full-length, posthumous album titled Songbird. Shooter discovered a collection of archival songs that were all recorded in the prime of Waylon’s career – from 1973 and 1984.
The album, which is the first of three Waylon albums that are set to be released, apparently didn’t need too much work, according to Shooter Jennings. Most of the project was recorded and ready to go, though Shooter did do some mixing and recorded some background vocals to bring it up to 2025 album standards.

Shooter considers Songbird and the other two albums that are still in the process of being put together as a gift to Waylon’s fans that have kept his music and legacy alive for so many years after his death in 2002:
“This project has given me an entirely new chapter in my relationship with my father and working on this music has brought a whole new understanding about how, when and why my dad made music. The hard work is there on the tapes and the passion and the soul within is as alive today as it was the day it was recorded.”
And thanks to a recent social media interaction, there’s reason to believe that a Waylon Jennings documentary is also in the works.
An account by the name of “Fantasy Maestro” on X (formerly Twitter) mentioned Shooter Jennings by name in one of their posts that requested a documentary on the “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way?” singer. The message from the social media user read like this:
“Shooter Jennings… with all the bad movies and documentaries about folks I don’t care about, how about a documentary about Waylon?”
That’s the cool thing about social media, eh? You can shoot your shot, and in rare circumstances, you’ll get an answer back.
Funny enough, Shooter took time out of his busy schedule to respond to this random person’s idea… I’m guessing because the musician and esteemed record producer was excited to share that there already is a documentary about Waylon Jennings that’s been worked on.

As of now, it’s untitled, but Shooter confirmed online that writer, producer and director Greg Olliver will handle the directorial duties on the project. The son of Waylon also shared that a living country music legend had just sat down to be interviewed for the documentary in the past couple of days:
“There is an official Waylon documentary underway with my good friend Greg Olliver (Lemmy, Chasing Whiskey) directing. Willie was interviewed yesterday. He also filmed all of me finding, preparing and finishing the ‘Songbird’ (and future) albums.”

Interesting that Shooter Jennings also mentioned that the director filmed the “finding, preparing and finishing” of Songbird and the other two albums that are still to come. Could that give us an idea of what the Waylon doc will look like? Maybe a director style where the story jumps back and forth between the time of the recordings and the time of Shooter finding and working on the projects?
Only time will tell how it all turns out, but country music fans should be excited to know that even more Waylon Jennings content and music will be available sooner rather than later.
