Indianapolis, IN – October 5, 2025 – Former NFL quarterback and current Fox Sports broadcaster Mark Sanchez, 38, has been charged with three misdemeanor counts following an incident on Saturday in Indianapolis that resulted in him being stabbed and hospitalized. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office announced the charges, which include assault causing injury, public intoxication, and unlawful entry into a vehicle. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Tuesday at 8:30 AM ET, with bail set at $300.

“This incident should never have happened,” Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears stated on Sunday. “What began as a dispute between a 38-year-old former professional athlete and a 69-year-old man should not have escalated into violence or caused serious injury to anyone. As with every case, we will follow the facts and the law, regardless of the outcome.”

According to the probable cause affidavit, Sanchez allegedly assaulted a truck driver at a hotel loading dock. The encounter reportedly intensified, with the truck driver believing he was in danger, leading him to pepper-spray Sanchez’s face. Despite this, as Sanchez continued advancing, the driver claimed he thought, “this guy is trying to kill me.”

The truck driver then drew a knife and, with Sanchez still approaching, stated he stabbed Sanchez “two or three times,” per the affidavit. The driver reported being knocked into a dumpster and falling, believing he was in a “life-or-death situation.” The affidavit notes the driver observed a “shocked expression” on Sanchez’s face before Sanchez fled.

Sanchez was arrested by Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) at a hospital on Saturday. Fox Sports confirmed in a Saturday statement that he is recovering and in stable condition. The affidavit details multiple stab wounds to Sanchez’s right torso, while the truck driver sustained a cut on his left cheek and was treated at a separate hospital.

Sanchez told police he only recalled “trying to hold onto a window” and couldn’t identify who stabbed him or the location. IMPD reported investigating a Saturday incident around 12:30 AM involving two men—one with multiple cuts and the other stabbed—though initial statements withheld names. Detectives reviewed footage of the confrontation, which occurred in the Wholesale District near the Indiana Statehouse.

Sanchez was slated to join the broadcast team for Sunday’s Las Vegas Raiders vs. Indianapolis Colts game at Lucas Oil Stadium but will no longer participate. He played eight NFL seasons after being drafted fifth overall by the New York Jets in 2009 from USC, leading them to consecutive AFC Championship Games in his first two years. He also played for the Philadelphia Eagles, Dallas Cowboys, and Washington, with his last regular-season appearance in 2018.
