Seattle Just Brought in RB Myles Gaskin, But What Does This Really Mean for Their Running Game?MH

Seahawks Sign RB Myles Gaskin To Practice Squad

The Seahawks signed running back Myles Gaskin to the practice squad on Wednesday, a homecoming for the former University of Washington standout. Running back Khalil Herbert terminated his contract, opening a spot on the practice squad.

Gaskin, who was back home in Lynnwood when he got the call from his hometown team, said he was busy burping his 11-week-old daughter when he found out he was heading south to Renton to join the Seahawks.

“Dream come true, but I’m just here to help this team doing anything I can,” Gaskin said before Wednesday’s practice. “I showed up late, so I’m kind of running behind, got to learn the plays. But I’m able to take this in for what it is, but right now at this moment, just trying to figure out this playbook as fast as I can.”

Gaskin, a seventh-round pick of the Dolphins in 2019, has appeared in 46 games with 17 starts for three teams over the past six seasons, with his best stretch coming with Miami in 2020 and 2021 when he rushed for 1,192 with six touchdowns and had 622 receiving yards with six receiving touchdowns in 27 games, 17 of them starts. But throughout his career, and even before it started, he always held out hope he would get a chance to put on a Seahawks uniform.

“Shoot, since draft day,” Gaskin said when asked how long he has been waiting for the Seahawks to call. “Probably since I was a little kid, honestly. I always had that hope, and prayed to God that hopefully I’d get signed, then it happened, and luckily it’s here. God’s been good, I give all the glory to God.”

And while Gaskin has significant playing time, including as a starter, in his past, he knows his short-term job on the practice squad is to help the team get ready and to support the current crop of running backs, led by Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet.

“They’ve got some great running backs,” Gaskin said. “I’m always keeping track of Seattle since I’m from here. Zach, K9 and those dudes and doing exactly what they’re supposed to. Hopefully I can learn as much as I can from them and help them grow, just being a little bit older, being able to speak to what I’ve seen in my past. But those guys know how to play ball at a high level.”

A Lynnwood, Washington native who starred at O’Dea High School, Gaskin had a record-setting career with the Huskies, becoming the first player in Pac-12 history to rush for 1,000 yards in four straight seasons and just the second NCAA FBS player to surpass 1,200 yards four straight times along with Wisconsin’s Ron Dayne. Gaskin finished his college career as Washington’s career leader in rushing yards (5,323) and rushing and total touchdowns (57 and 62), and his rushing total ranks third in Pac-12 history. Just last weekend, Gaskin was honored as a Husky Legend during Washington’s game against Ohio State.

“It was a beautiful thing,” Gaskin said. “I hadn’t seen a Husky game in Husky stadium since the last time I played at Husky Stadium. It was a beautiful thing, man. I had all my family and all my friends there.”
