Hollywood is standing firmly behind Jimmy Kimmel following ABC’s decision yesterday to suspend Jimmy Kimmel Live! indefinitely. The network’s move came after Kimmel’s pointed remarks about the September 10 shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Kimmel has not yet responded to the news of his cancellation.
On Monday’s episode, Kimmel criticized what he described as attempts by Trump supporters to distance themselves from the shooter. “We had some new lows over the weekend,” he said, “with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them.” He went on to accuse Trump’s base of politicizing the tragedy.
The backlash was swift—and emotional. Across social media, actors, comedians, and public figures voiced their outrage at the show’s suspension, many denouncing it as a blow to free speech.
Celebrities and politicians respond to Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension
Actor and comedian Paul Scheer questioned ABC’s decision in a late-night Threads post, wondering why the network wouldn’t shift the show to one of its cable affiliates like ESPN. Actor and comedian, Ben Stiller, reposting the news on X writing, “This isn’t right.”
Kathy Griffin, a longtime critic of Trump, urged followers on Instagram to stand with Kimmel. “Please, take it from me, it’s very important to have Jimmy Kimmel’s back right now,” she wrote. Griffin encouraged fans to “be vocal” and “be an ideological consumer,” adding, “money is all their crowd cares about.”

Christie Brinkley also weighed in, posting a tribute to late-night hosts on her Instagram story. Alongside a photo of Kimmel, Fallon, Colbert, Oliver, and Meyers, she wrote, “I love these guys! The laughter they provide us is as important as the air we breathe!” She ended with a rallying cry: “We must protect their and our First Amendment rights!”
Even Gavin Newsom (who is a politician achieving celebrity status thanks to his recent social media posts emulating President Trump), posted about it on Instagram only hours after the news. “These aren’t coincidences. This is coordinated. It’s dangerous,” he said.
Wanda Sykes’ response to Jimmy Kimmel’s cancellation
Wanda Sykes, who had been scheduled to appear on the show, posted a reel on Instagram with a fully made-up face and a message of defiance. “As you have heard by now, the Jimmy Kimmel show has been pulled indefinitely, abruptly, because of complaints from the Trump administration,” she said. “Trump ended freedom of speech in his first year.” She closed the video with a heartfelt, “Love you, Jimmy.”

Has Jimmy Kimmel responded?
Jimmy Kimmel has never been known to bite his tongue. When news of his friend, Stephen Colbert’s show, The Late Show, would be cancelled, Kimmel lashed out saying “F—- You, CBS”.
However, Kimmel has not yet responded publicly to the news of his suspension. He aslo hasn’t weighed in on whether the special tapings of the show in Brooklyn later this month will still go on. When and if he does, you’ll hear it here first.
What did Jon Stewart say about Jimmy Kimmel?
While some celebrities have remained silent about the cancellation (like The View hosts failing to address it, which outraged fans), many talk show hosts did, including Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, and Jon Stewart.
In the first late-night broadcasts after Kimmel’s suspension, many late-night hosts addressed the situation with satirical stagings of “government-approved” monologues, like Jon Stewart’s viral “patriotically obedient” monologue.
