The Kansas City Chiefs took a frustrating 31-28 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday Night Football. Entering Week 6 with a 2-3 record, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes didn’t try to sugarcoat the team’s status.

“It kind of just talks about our entire season. I feel like we have the guys, and we’ve executed at certain points in the game and looked really good,” Mahomes told reporters after the game. “Then we kind of crush ourselves with penalties and mistakes and interceptions and fumbles or whatever that is.”

Mahomes completed 29-of-41 passes for 318 yards and one touchdown against the Jaguars, along with six carries for 60 yards and a score. However, the three-time Super Bowl MVP also threw a third-quarter pick-six, where Jaguars linebacker Devin Lloyd ran the ball 99 yards down the field to score.

Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker also made a huge mistake by kicking the ball out of bounds, giving Jacksonville the ball on the 40-yard line for what turned out to be their game-winning drive. Overall, the Chiefs were their own worst enemy, racking up 13 penalties for 109 yards.

“We’ve kind of done that to ourselves all year long,” Mahomes said. “It’s been one guy here or there, and in this league, it’s so close that those [moments] change games. We got to do better. We’ve lost too many games already.”

As Mahomes prepares to face the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football, he seems to have pinpointed the team’s biggest issue.

Patrick Mahomes Punctuated The Chiefs’ Lack of ‘Winning Plays’ This Season

Last season, the Chiefs went 11-0 in one-score games. In 2025, they are 0-3. So what’s changed? Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, October 8, Mahomes mentioned their lack of “winning plays” several times during his seven-minute press conference.

On paper, the Chiefs should’ve defeated the Jaguars. Mahomes and Co. recorded more net passing yards, more net rushing yards, and won the turnover battle. “We’re just not making winning football plays in certain moments,” Mahomes explained.

“There’s obviously positives on how we’ve progressed as an offense, but like I said, I think more than anything it’s about making winning plays. In years past, we might not have had so much success offensively, but we’ve made those winning plays whenever it’s counted.

“And so I think that we have to get back to doing that. We want the offense to continue to progress, but when we get in these high-leverage, high-intense moments, we’ve got to execute at a higher level. And that starts with me and it kind of feeds throughout the rest of the team.”

Patrick Mahomes Put His Team On Notice Ahead Of The Lions-Chiefs Game

Despite their losing record, the Chiefs are considered slight favorites to defeat the Lions at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 12. The Lions are 4-1 and sit in first place in the NFC North. After a rough start to the season, Jared Goff and Co. appear to be firing on all cylinders.

“They play extremely hard. They have the mentality that they’re going to come in here and win a football game. We’ve got to match their intensity,” Mahomes said. “It’s going to take our best football — offense, defense, and special teams… We’re going to find a way to get a win.”
