The Carolina Panthers looked like they may have turned a corner last week, smashing the Atlanta Falcons to pick up a 30-0 victory. They were clean on offense, stingy on defense and just about perfect on special teams.
But they turned back this afternoon.

Here’s everything we know from Carolina’s Week 4 loss to the New England Patriots . . .
Final score
Patriots 42, Panthers 13
Keys to the game
- Carolina’s special teams went from a major asset in Week 3 to a major liability in Week 4. Patriots cornerback Marcus Jones totaled 167 yards on three punt returns, including an 87-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Panthers rookie kicker Ryan Fitzgerald, who was perfect on all of his attempts coming, missed an extra point and a 55-yard field goal attempt.
- The Panthers offense scored on their first possession, but only went downhill from there. Quarterback Bryce Young completed 18 of his 30 throws for 150 yards and a touchdown.
- Patriots quarterback and Charlotte, N.C. native Drake Maye put together an efficient performance, as he completed 14 of his 17 passes for 203 yards and scored three total touchdowns. His effort helped lead a run of 42 unanswered points.
It was over when . . .
The Patriots put together a smooth eight-play, 78-yard touchdown drive right out of the half. Tight end Hunter Henry hit the end zone on an easy 31-yard score to give his team a 35-6 lead at the 10:17 mark of the third quarter.
Carolina’s offense could not respond on the ensuing possession, turning the ball over on downs after Young missed wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan on a fourth-and-5 downfield. New England, up 29, took over with 6:28 remaining in the third quarter.
