Logan Webb breaks silence on Tony Vitello’s historic Giants hire — and his honest reaction says it all. lt

The San Francisco Giants just made one of the boldest hires in MLB history, bringing in Tennessee’s Tony Vitello seemingly out of nowhere. It marks the first time a coach has made the leap directly to an MLB managerial role without a prior stop as a bench coach or in another professional capacity. President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey made the hire, citing Vitello’s passion and leadership.

“Throughout our search, Tony’s leadership, competitiveness, and commitment to developing players stood out. His ability to build strong, cohesive teams and his passion for the game align perfectly with the values of our organization. We look forward to the energy and direction he will bring, along with the memories to be made, as we focus on the future of Giants baseball,” Posey said.

During his final interview at Tennessee, Vitello displayed his trademark humor when explaining one of the reasons he accepted the job — and it involved rookie Drew Gilbert, whom he coached at Tennessee.

“By now, you all know I officially accepted a position to babysit Drew Gilbert,” Vitello said.

As Vitello steps into his new role, he’ll need to earn the trust of his players. One key figure is ace Logan Webb, who has already heard — and shared — plenty of positive things about the new manager.

“Garrett Crochet said great things about him, I heard Drew Gilbert say great things about him. Even guys going to my gym who were recruited by him have the best things to say about him. I’m super excited, I know the guys are super excited. It’s going to be a healthy energy boost to our team and clubhouse,” Webb said.

The excitement around Vitello is already building, and he seems to have a natural connection with the clubhouse — exactly what the Giants need. Having the public backing of Webb is also a major boost for the new skipper.

In the coming weeks, Vitello is expected to start assembling his staff, giving players and fans a clearer picture of his vision for the team. Webb and many others are eager to see what he brings to San Francisco during this historic new chapter.
