Chelsea Gray has had an illustrious basketball career already. She currently has four WNBA championships (one with the Sparks and three with the Aces), the 2022 WNBA Finals MVP award, six All-Star appearances, and three All-WNBA teams on her resume. This offseason, Gray and her team also won the first-ever Unrivaled championship and was named Finals MVP.
Gray had a down season in 2024 after missing time with a foot injury, averaging the fewest points per game since 2016 and the fewest assists since 2017. She also shot the worst field-goal percentage of her career. Her struggles in 2024 caused some doubts about her game, but she alleviated those doubts with her performance in Unrivaled and a strong playoff run.
Gray has achieved almost everything a professional basketball player could possibly achieve. Nevertheless, she still has lofty goals for the rest of her career.
During the Aces’ exit interviews, Gray told reporters, “I want to be the winningest player in the league by the time I get up out of here.”
Chelsea Gray is on track to reach her goal
After a third title with the Aces and her fourth overall, Gray is now the active player with the most championships. She also ranks at the top among all players, including retired players. Rebekkah Brunson currently leads the field with five WNBA titles. She won one with the Sacramento Monarchs and four with the Minnesota Lynx.
Seattle Storm legend Sue Bird, Lynx superstar Maya Moore, 2011 Finals MVP Seimone Augustus, the Comets’ superstar trio of Sheryl Swoopes, Tina Thompson, and Cynthia Cooper, and Gray have all won four titles. Gray is the only active player on that list and thus the player closest to tying and exceeding Brunson’s record.
A’ja Wilson, Jackie Young, and Chelsea Gray—the centerpieces of the Aces’ three titles—are all set to enter unrestricted free agency because of the new CBA. If the Aces can retain all three and build another strong supporting cast around them, Gray may land her fifth championship sooner rather than later.
The Aces proved this season that they still have everything it takes to be the strongest team in the league. They have veteran star players, who have experience playing together at the highest level, one of the top coaches in the league, and an owner who is willing to invest in his team. Several other teams should be able to give the Aces trouble, but they are still in a good position to add to their dynastic run. Staying with the Aces currently looks like the best way for Gray to achieve her goal.
