Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald made a bold decision this past offseason when he replaced offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb with Klint Kubiak. It’s arguably the best decision Macdonald has made as the Seahawks’ head coach. If Kubiak’s offense keeps performing at its current clip, then he may not be in Seattle for very long.
Seattle’s offense has taken the league by storm through five contests. Kubiak’s unit ranks ninth in total offensive yards (358.4), fifth in passing yards (245.4), and fifth in points (29.2) per game. Quarterback Sam Darnold ranks seventh in yards (1,246) and touchdown passes (9). Darnold’s production under Kubiak has quieted the preseason critics.
If Seattle’s offense keeps trending in this direction, Kubiak will almost certainly be a top-three coaching candidate next offseason. On the surface, he looks like a potential top candidate alongside Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady and Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter. Kubiak has climbed the ladder.
He’s held multiple coordinator jobs. He’s worked with Kyle Shanahan. And now, he’s truly thriving as the play-caller of an offense that’s greatly exceeding league-wide expectations. Macdonald made a phenomenal hire, but that’s the risk of hiring a defensive-minded coach. When the offensive coordinator is as great as Kubiak has been, you’re at risk of losing him to another team.
