King Charles has forked out £50,000 to help fund a repair to the Royal Sandringham Estate in Norfolk.

The huge sum went towards restoring a feature that had been particularly beloved by his dear mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II.

As per Hello!, an annual financial report from St Peter and St Paul Parish Church in West Newton details the king’s donation.

The money has reportedly gone towards urgent repair works to the church’s roof.

The Grade II church is located on the Royal Sandringham Estate. The parish reportedly began a fundraising campaign for the repairs back in 2023.

They issued a statement two years ago saying: “Dear Friends, after a recent inspection of the church, we have been informed that our church is in urgent need of repair, especially to the roof. It is expected the works will cost in the region of £200,000, a daunting amount, but we are confident with fundraising events and the help of our local and wider communities, we will be able to successfully raise these much-needed funds. If you would like to save our much-loved church, please donate to the Help Save Our Church Roof Appeal.”

The local community have since raised around £78,000 of their £200,000 target, with the monarch gifting £50,000 last year. These funds will reportedly help to cover re-tiling the north slopes of the Nave and the Chancel roofs, as well as repairing the organ loft roof and transept roof.

St Peter and St Paul Parish Church

The stunning medieval church of St Peter and St Paul dates back to the 13th century. The site itself is said to date back even further, to the 7th century. The church also makes claim to having “the finest Norman font in the country”.

St Peter and St Paul held particular significance to Queen Elizabeth II, as her great-grandfather, King Edward VII, financed its rebuild in 1898. The church’s organ was also donated by his mother, the late Queen’s great-great-grandmother, Queen Victoria.

While St Mary Magdalene’s, also on the Royal Sandringham Estate, is perhaps better known for being the church where the royal family attends Christmas Day mass every year, St Peter and St Paul was reportedly Queen Elizabeth’s favourite. The late monarch is said to have fondly frequented the church most Sundays while staying at Sandringham.

Queen Elizabeth typically spent every December – February at the Norfolk residence, prior to her death in September 2022. She was joined there by members of her extended family over the festive period.
