One of the most anticipated seasons each year is Christmas, and kids, in particular, do not play about it. So it’s just right that adults put in maximum effort to put smiles on their faces during the yuletide.

While speaking on The View‘s companion podcast Behind the Table on November 13, veteran actress and comedian Whoopi Goldberg touched on something she does to make Christmas memorable for children, which is secretly replying letters that they write to Santa Claus, PEOPLE reported.

“I just feel like everybody needs a little help, and if you can help somebody… it’s why I try to do Santa at the post office. I try to get letters and we try to answer kids’ letters to Santa,” the EGOT-winning actress explained.

“It’s things that we can do, and it doesn’t cost a lot,” Goldberg, 70, added, “because you want to give people the ability to do something that brings up how they see themselves.”

The Sister Act star touched on her holiday ritual for children on her 70th birthday. The View commemorated Goldberg becoming a septuagenarian with a podcast episode and a special birthday episode that shed light on charities that she loved supporting.

They include One Simple Wish, a charity focused on children in foster care, and The Heifer Project International, whose “mission to end hunger and poverty in a sustainable way by supporting and investing alongside local farmers and their communities.” The other charity is God’s Love We Deliver, whose mission is “to improve the health and well-being of people living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses by alleviating hunger and malnutrition.”

Goldberg, on the podcast, stated that it was prudent to highlight charities and occasionally donate because “a lot of people aren’t getting what they need,” PEOPLE reported. Goldberg also stated that people were finding it difficult to survive because of the high cost of living.

“It’s not fair. People used to actually have savings,” the 70-year-old said. “And people can’t hold onto their savings, because every time you turn around, somebody’s hand is out.”
