Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) refused to walk back her comments comparing President Donald Trump to Adolf Hitler, saying on Sunday that she has used “accurate language” in the past when comparing the commander-in-chief to the man who led Nazi Germany. She then doubled down on her claim, saying the president continues to use the Hitler “playbook.”
Crockett, during on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday morning, was shown several clips by co-host Dana Bash of her making inflammatory remarks, including calling President Trump a “wannabe Hitler.” Bash pressed Crockett on whether she had a “responsibility as an elected official not to raise the temperature, but rather lower the temperature,” especially when you consider conservative activist Charlie Kirk was just shot and killed for his political beliefs.
The Texas congresswoman declined to distance herself from her past comments. Instead, she doubled down and said the way Trump has acted lately, including celebrating Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension from ABC, make it fair to compare the USA to the Third Reich.
“I think that my responsibility is to be transparent and to be honest, and the reality is that we are living in a time in which this administration and this regime is not interested in making sure that people understand history,” Crockett said. “We need to understand why they are so problematic. And so I am using that language because it is accurate language. When we see the consolidation of power, when we see them trying to chill speech of jokesters, when we’re seeing all of this, that is the playbook out of Hitler. And I won’t deny it.”
Crockett continued her wordy diatribe by saying Trump, by “inciting violence” on January 6th, 2021 and his other actions, has shown he is an authoritarian. The congresswoman also said she has no time for political enemies — who she referred to as “they” – who deny the “historical facts,” which she said included American slavery.
“Just like they don’t want to talk about the fact that slavery was real in this country, and that my people were enslaved and dragged and raped and abused, and they don’t want to account for any of that,” Crockett said. “They don’t believe in reparations. No, I think it is okay for me to understand history and communicate in a very clear way about why we should feel as if there is a concern.”
She has not been mincing words during her media appearances lately; Crockett, during a hit on MSNBC last Sunday, compared ICE to “slave patrols” of the antebellum South.
