Crockett has seen a national rise in her first term following her heated exchange with Greene and speaking at the Democratic National Convention.
NEW YORK — U.S. Rep Jasmine Crockett, D-Dallas, has garnered national recognition in her first term, following a viral exchange with U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green, R-Georgia, and her speech at the Democratic National Convention.
She spoke about her rise with Stephen Colbert of “The Late Show” Tuesday.
During a hearing last May, Greene suggested that Jasmine Crockett’s “fake eyelashes” were affecting her reading. It was Crockett’s response that gained huge traction on social media, though, with Crockett referring to Greene as having a “bleach blonde bad-built butch body.”
The moment spread like wildfire across social media and has since been put on T-shirts for sale by Crockett’s campaign. Since then, Crockett has appeared across the country campaigning for Democrats, and is a national co-chair of the Kamala Harris-Tim Walz presidential campaign.
“It feels like an out-of-body experience,” Harris told Colbert about her rise since taking office.
Crockett said that when someone signs up for public service they expect to go in and create new policies and help the people, but she’s ended up in fights with people like Greene.
“You’re really wondering, like, what am I doing here?” Crockett said.
Crockett said the phrase was inspired just by looking at Greene in the moment.
“I just posed a question,” she said. “I looked over at her and from head to toe I dressed her down.”
Crockett said she expects the Democrats to take back the House of Representatives after the November election, which is currently under a Republican majority.
“No one wants anymore of MAGA Mike,” Crockett said, referring to House Speaker Mike Johnson. “This has been the most unproductive Congress on the books and I think people are just tired of it.”
Campaigning for Harris, Crockett said she tells prospective voters to become informed about issues important to them, along with Project 2025, a conservative political initiative developed by the Heritage Foundation.
For people who aren’t sure who to vote for, or don’t care for either presidential candidate, Crockett said she has a message for them.
“What I tell them is that this election isn’t really about the individuals,” Crockett said. “We are trying to figure out what type of America we want to be. Do we want to go back or do we want to go forward?”
