The New York Yankees were one of many teams that were very aggressive at the 2025 MLB trade deadline. They acquired Ryan McMahon, Camilo Doval, David Bednar, and Jose Caballero, among others, in a busy deadline shopping spree.

While they didn’t all perform as great as the Yankees would’ve hoped, these additions were an overall positive for the Yankees in the second half of 2025.

But, according to Ryan Garcia of empiresportsmedia.com, the Yankees were trying to land an even bigger fish at the deadline. Garcia reports that Jasson Dominguez was offered to the Minnesota Twins in an effort to acquire Jhoan Duran.

“The team would offer him in a package seven months later for Jhoan Duran,” Garcia writes, “Who would eventually be dealt to the Phillies, sources told Empire Sports Media.”

Dominguez was initially a consideration in the offseason for a trade for Kyle Tucker. While the Chicago Cubs wound up landing Tucker, who had a strong year for the NL Central club, the Yankees later turned their attention to another trade.

Duran wound up going to the Philadelphia Phillies in one of the biggest trades of the deadline, and the Yankees were also involved in trade talks.

Dominguez is a former top prospect of the Yankees, who, now at 22 years old, has yet to put it all together in the Majors. This past season, in 123 games, he had a .257 batting average with a .719 OPS and 0.5 bWAR.

The Yankees’ willingness to move Dominguez points to the club being open to moving him in a different trade this offseason, if the right player were to become available.

Duran, whom the Yankees tried trading for, would’ve been a good pickup. He’s under club control through 2027, and at 27 years old, would be a great new closer in New York.

In 23 games with the Phillies, Duran had a 2.18 ERA with 16 saves in 20.2 innings pitched with 27 strikeouts. Before coming to the Phillies, Duran had a 2.01 ERA in 49 games with 16 saves for the Twins.

Landing on a good team helped Duran close out big games, and while the Phillies didn’t make it past the NLDS, Duran was a good closer when called upon.

This report from Garcia and Empire Sports Media isn’t just noteworthy for the Yankees’ interest in Duran; it’s also a huge indication that Dominguez could be on the move this winter.

Brian Cashman and the Yankees will surely be busy in the offseason ahead of the 2026 season, and Dominguez, who’s struggled to live up to the hype of a former top prospect, could be dealt to improve the roster for 2026 and beyond.
