Inside the Buzz: Why a $54 Million All-Star Might Be the Missing Piece in Boston’s Comeback. lt

Heading into the offseason, the Boston Red Sox have a few areas where they need to improve.

The Red Sox returned to the postseason for the first time since 2021 after going 89-73, but fell short to the rival New York Yankees in the wild card round. Boston did not get much production out of its first basemen this offseason, and may look elsewhere for a new first baseman after Triston Casas’ struggles this season.

One potential option the Red Sox could look into is Pete Alonso. WEEI’s Rob Bradford urged Boston to sign the five-time All-Star this offseason.

“With the uncertainty of Casas’s role, the logical avenue to fix what ails the Red Sox in regards to the power-hitting problem is taking a run at another one of Boras’s clients – Alonso,” Bradford wrote Tuesday. “This isn’t Juan Soto, but, like Bregman a year ago, this is a really good fit.

“Alonso is a player you don’t have to worry about. He has played in the second-most games of anybody in MLB over the past four seasons, hitting the fourth-most homers of any player. Yes, the ‘models’ might not suggest it’s worth allocating such a big chunk of change to a corner infielder, but some of those same narratives were also in play when it came to Bregman a year ago. Sometimes, it’s just about being the right guy at the right time for the right team.”

Alonso, 30, recently opted out of the second year on his two-year, $54 million contract with the New York Mets, according to Spotrac, and will test free agency for the second straight year. Though Casas is projected to return before the start of the 2026 season for the Red Sox, the 25-year-old struggled this season, slashing only .182/.277/.580 with three home runs an 11 RBIs in 29 games played.

Casas has potential, but is injury-prone. Alonso likely would not be a cheap acquisition, but the 30-year-old remains one of the best power hitters in all of baseball, mashing 38 home runs this season with 126 RBIs, and would be a great addition for Boston.
