The San Francisco Giants are undergoing changes in their managerial position. Former Giants catcher Buster Posey, now in his first managerial search as the team’s president of baseball operations, made the decision to fire Bob Melvin after a disappointing end to the season.

“After careful evaluation, we determined that making a change in leadership was in the best interest of the team,” said Posey. “The last couple of months have been both disappointing and frustrating for all of us, and we did not perform up to our standards. We now turn our focus to identifying a new leader to guide us forward.”

Posey has been clear about the type of manager he hopes to hire, outlining a blueprint for the ideal candidate.

“[It] has to be somebody that can read a room really well, understanding that there’s a lot of different personalities that you have. When you do measure those personalities, then being able to be decisive about understanding what makes each guy tick,” Posey shared. “I think that can serve as potential for accountability conversations, some motivation that can be emphasized by the manager.”

One surprising name that has emerged is former catcher Jason Varitek.

“Before the start of the 2025 season, the Red Sox changed Varitek’s title. The ‘game-planning and catching coach’ became the ‘game-planning and run prevention coach,’ a switch reportedly made so that the three-time All-Star would be more involved in day-to-day strategy. Varitek, a former major league catcher with a couple of World Series rings, seemingly checks some important boxes. His identity as a player and coach is tied to the Red Sox, but if Varitek ever left Boston, he might do so to work for someone with Posey’s résumé,” The San Francisco Standard’s Kerry Crowley wrote.

Though Varitek is a surprising candidate, he fits the mold Posey is seeking. The Giants are aiming for winning seasons, and Varitek could deliver just that.

There is still time to consider all options, but Varitek stands out as a strong candidate. The Giants could pull off a heist with this hire.
