On Friday October 24, 2025, the San Francisco Giants bolstered their catching depth ahead of 2026, re-signing Logan Porter to a minor league contract.
Porter, 30, played in 5 games for the Giants this season. He recorded 1 hit in 7 at-bats, 1 RBI and 2 runs scored. He spent most of the season with the AAA Sacramento River Cats, hitting .212 with 6 home runs and 29 RBI in 73 games.
His contract comes with an invite to big league Spring Training in 2026.
Porter likely won’t be the splashiest hire of the new Tony Vitello era in San Francisco. But his signing is a sign that the Giants are wasting no time getting active in free agency now that they have their new manager in town.
All About Logan Porter
Porter was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Dixie State University in 2018 by the Kansas City Royals. The Royals envisioned he would just be a bullpen catcher for them at the time.
But he had a scorching hot two seasons at the plate in 2018-2019, hitting over .300.
After the 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Porter’s last few seasons at the plate have been a roller coaster. He struggled in 2021, rebounded in a big way in 2022 and hit over .300 again, then fell back to earth a bit in AAA in 2023.
Still, the Royals gave him a shot in the Big Leagues in 2023.
After a hot start in minors again 2024, the Giants traded a player to be named later or cash considerations in order to acquire Porter. But after he triggered his opt-out clause just a month later, the Giants were forced to cut him. He signed a major league contract with the New York Mets but struggled in AAA Syracuse.
He reunited with the Giants this past offseason.
He’s been an underdog his entire career and no team has given him a consistent MLB opportunity yet. Though, that’s partly because of his inconsistency at the plate.
The Giants’ backup in 2025, Andrew Knizner, really struggled at the plate for most of the season. So, if Porter can get hot at the plate in Spring Training, there’s an outside shot he could win the backup catcher job.
Rare Free Agent Move During The World Series
MLB free agency doesn’t officially start until after the World Series ends. So, it’s rare to see the Giants or any other team make a roster move before the conclusion of the postseason. Even though the Giants’ season has been over for nearly a month.
But because Porter was a minor league free agent, the Giants were able to re-sign him now.
It’s a good sign that the Giants are doing this. Not only because it shows initiative right after they signed manager Tony Vitello. But because if they take care of all of the minor league free agents they want to acquire now, they can focus on the MLB free agents they want to target when the World Series ends.
Remember, the Giants also have to assemble a coaching staff around Vitello, so their plates are full this offseason.
Giants fans, are you glad to have Logan Porter back in the organization? What do you think San Francisco’s next move will be?
