On Thursday October 9, 2025, John Shea of the San Francisco Standard reported San Francisco Giants President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey interviewed former Baltimore Orioles Manager Brandon Hyde for the Giants’ managerial opening.

Hyde managed the Orioles from 2019-2025, accumulating a 421-492 record in the regular season and an 0-5 record in the Postseason.

John Shea reports that former Orioles manager Brandon Hyde has completed an interview for the Giants managerial opening.

He has some connections in the Bay Area and was the 2023 AL manager of the year.

That included back-to-back postseason appearances for Baltimore in 2023 and 2024. The highlight of Hyde’s tenure was easily the 2023 season. He led Baltimore to 101 wins and an American League East division title, which was a remarkable turnaround from when Baltimore went 52-110 just two seasons prior in 2021. He won 2023 American League Manager of the Year for his efforts.

The Orioles fired him on May 17 after the Orioles went 15-28 to open the 2025 season.

A Switch Up In Search Strategy — Or Is It?

Hearing Brandon Hyde’s name in the manager mix probably feels like a new direction in Posey’s manager search for Giants fans.

Posey’s reported candidates are mostly first time managers who are most famous for playing catcher in the MLB just a few seasons ago.

Posey interviewed former MLB All-Star catcher Kurt Suzuki for the managerial opening already. It’s heavily rumored that his preferred candidate thus far is his former backup catcher in San Francisco, Nick Hundley.

Hyde, who has much more managerial experience and much less MLB playing experience means Posey’s search isn’t just limited to young former catchers, right?

Wrong. While Brandon Hyde never played in the MLB, he was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chicago White Sox in 1997 as — you guessed it — a catcher.

He also has ties to Northern California. Hyde was born in Santa Rosa, California and played at both Montgomery High School in Santa Rosa and Santa Rosa Junior College before transferring to Cal State Long Beach.

According to Shea, Hyde also grew up a Giants fan.

The Adley Rutschman Connection

Since the 2025 MLB trade deadline, Giants fans have urged the team to trade for Baltimore Orioles catcher Adley Rutschman.

The Giants have a Gold Glove starting catcher in Patrick Bailey, but many fans are critical of Bailey due to his limitations at the plate.

In 2025, Bailey hit .222 with 6 home runs and 55 RBI.

Rutschman, on the other hand, has shown a lot more promise with a bat in his hands. His best season at the plate was in 2023, when he hit .277 with 20 home runs and 80 RBI and won the American League Silver Slugger award at the catcher position.

However, Rutschman severely regressed in 2025, hitting only .220 with 9 home runs and 29 RBI.

Injuries hampered Rutschman and limited him to 90 games, but the Orioles also gave Samuel Basallo his first cup of coffee in the MLB during the season. The O’s may view Basallo as their catcher of the future.

If that’s the case, and Hyde becomes the manager in San Francisco, there’s honestly no place that it would make more sense for Rustchman to play than in SF under Hyde. All three of Rutschman’s best seasons, from 2022-24, came with Hyde as manager.

Maybe if the Giants bring Hyde to town he will push Posey to acquire Rutschman. Or maybe, Posey is considering Hyde because he is also considering an offseason trade for Rutschman.

Either way, the hiring of Hyde could be related to a potential offseason swing for Rutschman.

Giants fans, what do you think about the idea of having Brandon Hyde as the next manager in San Francisco?
