The reported frontrunner to be the next manager of the SF Giants is former backup catcher Nick Hundley. Probably his most memorable moment as a Giant was when he got into it with Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig.
It has been a while since he was with Los Angeles, but Puig was one of the most reviled Dodgers in recent memory. He was best known for his spats with Madison Bumgarner but the one with Hundley was a good dust-up as well and caused the benches to clear.
Remembering when SF Giants managerial frontrunner Nick Hundley got into it with Yasiel Puig
What triggered the spat was Puig’s big reaction after missing a good pitch to hit and getting upset with himself. Hundley took exception to this and said something to Puig, probably something to the effect of, “Get back in the box.”
Puig didn’t like that so he got in Hundley’s face, shoved him a few times, and the benches cleared. Hunter Pence had to run in from right field to restrain Hundley and a few players ended up on the ground but it was not an all-out brawl.
The full altercation can be viewed here.
In the end, it seems like kind of a pointless fight but it shows that Hundley is not afraid of anyone and is not going to back down against someone like Puig which is what you want in a manager.
Hundley has been connected to the manager opening for some time and even though he has no managerial experience, he seems to have the inside track on the job right now.
Giants fans may not remember a ton about Hundley’s time with the Giants since he was with the team during some down years in 2017 and 2018. If they remember anything it is probably that he won the Willie Mac Award and got into a fight with Puig which are two pretty good things to have on your resume if you want to manage the Giants.
Obviously, it is not a done deal that Hundley will be hired as the next manager but it seems likely based on recent reporting and the general vibes of the search.
If he does end up getting the job, reminders about the incident with Puig will be a nice way to endear himself to fans who may not be all that familiar with him. Maybe the Giants need that fire to finally be competitive with the Dodgers in the NL West again.
