Back in May, Eric Church performed two shows at The Pinnacle in Nashville to celebrate the release of his latest album, Evangeline vs. The Machine. The album was obviously one of the biggest creative ventures of Church’s career, featuring a full horn section, gospel choir and orchestra on the eight-track project that shows off not only his country roots but also weaves in rock, blues and soul.
And it was that same creative spirit that was on full display during the shows at The Pinnacle.
Before the show even started, there were men positioned around the venue in gas masks and hazmat suits, representing “the machine” that Eric was taking on. And when the 27-minute intro started, featuring Pink Floyd music and visuals on the screen that had the crowd wondering exactly what they were in for, everybody knew it was going to be a special show.
And they were right. Church started the shows, like he’s doing now on his Free The Machine tour, by playing the entire Evangeline vs. The Machine album from front to back, complete with the full accompaniment of instruments and vocals on stage with him.
He then launched into “Desperate Man” and ended the show with an 11-song set of some of his biggest hits like you’ve never heard them before.
But now, everybody’s going to get the chance to hear them.
Church announced today that he would be releasing a live album, Evangeline vs. The Machine Comes Alive, on February 13, featuring the soundtrack from his shows in Nashville.
The album will be released on February 13, the same day that he’s bringing the shows to IMAX for a two-night concert experience.
Speaking on bringing the shows to the big screen, Church said his shows at The Pinnacle were some of the most special of his career:
“I’ve played a lot of shows. I’ve never had two nights like these where the room felt literally transported. We went to a different plane, musically, artistically, emotionally. It was unforgettable and I’ll remember it the rest of my days.”
It’s no surprise that Church is choosing to release a live album to go with the IMAX movie. He was right when he says that those were unforgettable shows, and now everybody will have the chance to hear them. And if you’ve never heard Evangeline vs. The Machine live…well, you’re in for something special.
