- Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his Week 3 performance.
- Williams threw for 298 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions against the Dallas Cowboys.
- This marks the first time a Bears quarterback has received the honor since Justin Fields in 2022.
- Head coach Ben Johnson noted Williams was “unfazed” by the award, focusing instead on team success.
For the third consecutive week, an NFC North quarterback won the NFC’s Offensive Player of the Week. Only this time, it wasn’t a Chicago Bears opponent. It was Bears gunslinger Caleb Williams taking home the honors after his impressive Week 3 performance against the Dallas Cowboys.
In Chicago’s big win over Dallas, Williams threw for 298 yards, four touchdowns, no interceptions and he didn’t take a sack, which was the first time in his NFL career that Williams did not get sacked by an opponent.
Williams earning NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors was the first time a Bears quarterback had won since Justin Fields in 2022, and Williams’ career-high 142.6 passer rating against Dallas showed a lot of growth in his game. Just three games into his relationship with new head coach Ben Johnson, Williams is tied for second in the NFL with seven touchdown passes and tied for the league lead with nine completions of 25 yards or more.
As the individual success grows for Williams, success for the Bears continues to grow. Chicago is just 1-2 in their first three games under their new head coach but seemingly are building momentum. Meeting with the media on Wednesday, Johnson was highly complimentary of Williams, who he said was “completely unfazed” upon winning NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors.
“I tried to recognize him in front of the group and he wasn’t having it,” Johnson said. “Very stoic. He’s already on to the next game.”
The sentiment shows that Williams isn’t ready to receive any praise and is focused on the task at hand in looking to stack wins for his football team. After winning just five games in his rookie season, which was overshadowed by several coaching changes and plenty of criticism, Williams is showing growth in maturity and recognizing that the most important factor is team success.
It’s a great achievement for Williams to have early into his second season, but the tone around the Bears has changed, and it’s never been more clear that team success means much more than individual player success.
