Just days after clinching his first Emmy on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, director Jim Hoskinson shocks fans by announcing his exit before the May finale.th

Director Jim Hoskinson picked up the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series at last weekend’s Creative Arts Emmys, which was The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’s first ever Emmy.

It’s a pretty good time to go out, as Hoskinson revealed last night on the CBS show.

Colbert had his director, who has worked on 1,446 episodes of The Colbert Report and over 1,600 episodes of The Late Show, as a guest on the show to thank him.

“We’ve worked together for 20 years and I’ll always certainly think of you as my director,” Colbert said before revealing that Hoskinson was the director who helmed the infamous clip of Bill O’Reilly screaming “We’ll do it live, fuck it,” on Inside Edition that regularly goes viral.

Colbert also thanked him for his “leadership, calmness under pressure, willingness to try very difficult things at the very last minute.”

“I could not have done it without you,” the comedian added.

Hoskinson said, “We’ve had many memories. We mostly had great moments and occasionally we do live shows that [can be hairy] but we have a job where we come in and laugh so it makes the day pretty good.”

Hoskinson is passing the baton to associate director Yvonne De Mare, who has taken over for the next eight months ahead of the end of The Late Show in May.

“We’re very proud that we’re able to do the show that you have in mind because it is really challenging. I can’t think of another show that uses as many elements, tapes, clips, graphics and to be able to do that because you want to be able to tell the story with documentation, we’re able to do that and we’re very proud,” Hoskinson added.

The director, who revealed that he would be buying an RV and “heading out,” also thanked his team. “Everybody else has to do their job before I can do my job. It’s really nice to know that we all have to work together. It makes us feel good that we work together so well as a team,” he said.

Colbert closed out by saying, “We’ll miss you, Jim.”
