Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) believes Democrats need to take a “MasterClass” from Zohran Mamdani after the Democrat came out victorious in New York City’s mayoral election.
Joining CNN’s Laura Coates on Thursday, Crockett was asked what advice she would give Mamdani after he staved off a challenge from Andrew Cuomo (I) and Curtis Sliwa (R) to win the election.
The congresswoman described Mamdani as a “master” who could teach Democrats a thing or two about communication and organization.
Crockett said:
Listen, I don’t know that he needs my advice. He has been a master and frankly he could do a MasterClass for all Democrats on communication. Whether you’re talking about speaking with passion and heart and just talking to the working class, not worried about the billionaires, they’re gonna be fine — in fact, the better that the working-class does, the better they do. That means that they’ve got the employees that they need to make the profits that they needed. And ultimately we are the ones that spend the money. I don’t think he needs me. What I think is that our party needs to learn from Mamdani. They need to learn about organizing people on all levels. They need learn to talk to everyone and not just those double Ds or triple Ds, which are the people that always come out. They need to not necessarily give up on anybody. They need go to places that they aren’t used to seeing Democrats.
Crockett added that Democrats need to focus more on rural America, a point she said she tried to make to former Vice President Kamala Harris’s 2024 campaign, but it fell on deaf ears. The congresswoman has said before that she asked the campaign to focus her visits more on rural America, but the campaign felt she was more beneficial elsewhere.
“One of the things that I did on the presidential [campaign] was I kept telling them, send me to rural America. I have things that need to say,” she said.
Coates asked Crockett if she would use her own advice for a future Senate run.
“We’re still evaluating that. But yeah, I think that it is about expanding the electorate,” Crockett said.
