Faith and hope got these stars through very challenging times.

Carrie Underwood

Crisis she faced: After rising rapidly following American Idol, Carrie, 42, faced the intense pressures of fame and the rigors of touring and balancing her personal and professional life. Her marriage to Mike Fisher, 45, was reportedly in trouble at times because of her shot to stardom and their busy careers.

How did faith save her? “Carrie’s strong Christian belief has helped her rescue her marriage more than once,” says an insider. Looking to the man above is key: “I’d say a prayer and leave it in God’s hands,” says Carrie, whose 2021 album, My Savior, is a direct expression of her faith.

What’s her life like now? She remains one of country’s biggest artists but remains grounded in faith-led decisions. “Her marriage is solid now,” says a source, “because they never gave up or lost hope.”

Alan Jackson

Crisis he faced: Alan, 67, suffers from a nerve disorder that has brought an end to touring. He also has spoken of spiritual drift and the challenge of staying grounded during his long career.

How did faith save him? He stated, “Faith, hope and love are some good things He gave us. But the greatest is love.”

What’s his life like now? Alan, whose Christian faith permeates his songs and public persona, continues to be respected for his songwriting and rock-solid integrity. He lives a grounded life in Nashville, focused on family, faith and music.

Garth Brooks & Trisha Yearwood

Crisis they faced: In 2024, a hair and makeup artist who’d worked for Garth filed a civil suit accusing him of sexual assault — weeks afterward he filed a separate complaint under a pseudonym, alleging she was attempting to extort him for “many millions of dollars.”

How did faith save them? Garth, 63, and Trisha, 61, often talk about their faith, have songs with religious tones, and believe they were meant to find each other, leading Trisha to stand by her man during this crisis.

Their Biggest Challenge Yet: Insiders say the allegations rattled Garth but haven’t affected his 20-year marriage. While he and Trisha flirted with moving to Ireland, they decided to remain in Nashville and dedicate their marriage and life together as part of a broader mission of unity and service, continuing their philanthropic efforts for charities like Habitat for Humanity.

George Strait

Crisis he faced: After more than 40 years of fame in country music, George, 73, has spoken of the challenge of staying true to himself, maintaining values and balancing life and career.

How did faith save him? George’s songs, including “I Saw God Today,” reflect a belief in everyday miracles: “His fingerprints are everywhere/I just slowed down to stop and stare.”

What’s his life like now? The “King of Country” is still touring and recording, though less frequently. He remains grounded in his family life and faith, and his fans respect his integrity and consistency.

Tim McGraw & Faith Hill

 <span class="wp-caption-text">Getty Images</span>

Crisis they faced: Tim’s drinking nearly destroyed his marriage to Faith. “I was a wild man,” he recalls. “I remember a moment when I was getting out of [bed] and going to the liquor cabinet and taking a big shot at 8:00 in the morning and thinking, ‘I have to wake the kids up.’ ” He adds, “It was affecting my family … I could have lost everything in my life,” including his wife, whom he married in 1996.

How did faith save them? “First off, meeting my wife saved my life,” Tim told People, 58. He credits her influence, the grounding of family and his Christian faith as the shift: “She turned my life around. I couldn’t have found a better woman.” Says Faith, 58: “Shared faith is the final key to a long and lasting relationship. Tim and I share a quick quiet moment together before hitting the stage. Always praying.”

What’s their life like now? Tim has been sober since 2008, and he and Faith, who share three daughters, Gracie, 28, Maggie, 27, and Audrey, 23, have a beautiful life. “I’ve been lucky,” shares Tim. “I’ve been very fortunate.”

Jelly Roll

 <span class="wp-caption-text">Getty Images</span>

Crisis he faced: Born Jason DeFord, Jelly Roll, now 40, endured years of addiction, crime, incarceration and a “near-rock-bottom” lifestyle before his music breakthrough.

How did faith save him? “God saved me from the pit 24 years ago!” he says. “Clean and sober since then and living life! God is the greatest!” He acknowledges his faith as the driving force behind his redemption, declaring he believes “God had a bigger purpose” for him.

What’s his life like now? He’s a crossover country/rock star, open about his redemption story, uses his platform for hope and ministry, and continues to integrate faith into his art and message.

Walker Hayes

 <span class="wp-caption-text">Getty Images</span>

Crisis he faced: Walker, 45, was an atheist and heavy drinker from age 13 onward, working odd jobs while chasing music and experiencing the loss of a newborn daughter in 2018.

How did faith save him? He reluctantly stepped into church and now says: “The answer is Christ.” He recalls the shift: “I’m ashamed to say this, but I would’ve called myself an alcoholic atheist.” Through a friendship with a pastor and a surrender to faith, Walker found sobriety and purpose.

What’s his life like now? Today he’s a commercially successful country artist with the megahit song “Fancy Like,” sober, a father of six, and vocal about how faith transformed his past chaos into a life of meaning. “I’m not who I was,” he says. “I am a new creation and getting newer every day.”

Johnny Cash

 <span class="wp-caption-text">Getty Images</span>

Crisis he faced: “The Man in Black,” who died in 2003 at 71 after declining for several years due to complications from diabetes and autonomic neuropathy, struggled with alcohol and prescription-drug abuse, endured a turbulent marriage and had brushes with death and long periods of personal darkness.

How did faith save him? “I have tried drugs and a little of everything else, and there is nothing in the world more soul-satisfying than having the kingdom of God building inside you and growing,” he said.

The impact he made: Although the singer has passed, his legacy remains powerful. His gospel records, memoirs and music carry the message of redemption and faith. He’s still an inspirational figure for those who faced darkness and found light.

Randy Travis

 <span class="wp-caption-text">Getty Images</span>

Crisis he faced: Randy’s early life involved trouble with the law, motorcycles wrecks, drugs and chaos. His very survival — he also suffered a severe stroke in 2013 and miraculously recovered — underscores the magnitude of his turnaround.

How did faith save him? After picking up the Bible and reading it during a low point, Randy, 66, said: “For me baptism was a powerful illustration of the statement that the old Randy was dead, buried in the water and gone, and that I was a new person. Thanks to Jesus, I had been raised to a new life here and now and eternal life in heaven to come.”

What’s his life like now? Travis is largely retired from performing due to his health, but his gospel albums, his ministry work and his testimony remain influential. He lives with his wife on a ranch, anchored in faith and gratitude. “He’s a warrior,” says his wife, Mary. “He’s an angel.”

Chris Stapleton

 <span class="wp-caption-text">Getty Images</span>

Crisis he faced: Chris, 47, struggled for years as a songwriter waiting for his big break, dealing with 20-plus years of industry rejection and self-doubt.

How did faith save him? He grew up in “a prayed-at-every-meal kind of” Christian household, so he never gave up, often writing music with spiritual themes.

What’s his life like now? He’s a multi-Grammy winner and revered for blending country, blues and gospel in his music. He remains grateful and grounded, and frequently comments on how faith and authenticity guide his path.

Dolly Parton

 <span class="wp-caption-text">Curtis Hilbun / AFF-USA.COM / MEGA</span>

Crisis she faced: Raised in extreme poverty with 11 siblings in a Tennessee log cabin, Dolly, 79, experienced hardship early on and then navigated the pressures of fame, loss and expectation throughout her career. In March, she lost her husband of 59 years, Carl Dean, and more recently she’s had to cancel performances because of health issues.

How did faith save her? “My faith impacts everything I do because I do believe that, through God, all things are possible,” says Dolly. “God is my co-writer and my co-pilot. Anything I do, I always keep God first and foremost because that’s where I draw my strength.” She also believes in the power of prayer, which has helped heal her when sick.

Looking At The Future: The music legend — who’s worth a whopping $600 million — continues creating, performing and building her empire (Dollywood, philanthropy, etc.). She remains grounded in her faith, says she’s “just a workhorse” and sees her life and work as ministry. “I just try to go on, because I know I have to.”
