Crisis he faced: Born Jason DeFord, Jelly Roll, now 40, endured years of addiction, crime, incarceration and a “near-rock-bottom” lifestyle before his music breakthrough.

How did faith save him? “God saved me from the pit 24 years ago!” he says. “Clean and sober since then and living life! God is the greatest!” He acknowledges his faith as the driving force behind his redemption, declaring he believes “God had a bigger purpose” for him.

What’s his life like now? He’s a crossover country/rock star, open about his redemption story, uses his platform for hope and ministry, and continues to integrate faith into his art and message.

Walker Hayes

Crisis he faced: Walker, 45, was an atheist and heavy drinker from age 13 onward, working odd jobs while chasing music and experiencing the loss of a newborn daughter in 2018.

How did faith save him? He reluctantly stepped into church and now says: “The answer is Christ.” He recalls the shift: “I’m ashamed to say this, but I would’ve called myself an alcoholic atheist.” Through a friendship with a pastor and a surrender to faith, Walker found sobriety and purpose.

What’s his life like now? Today he’s a commercially successful country artist with the megahit song “Fancy Like,” sober, a father of six, and vocal about how faith transformed his past chaos into a life of meaning. “I’m not who I was,” he says. “I am a new creation and getting newer every day.”

Johnny Cash

Crisis he faced: “The Man in Black,” who died in 2003 at 71 after declining for several years due to complications from diabetes and autonomic neuropathy, struggled with alcohol and prescription-drug abuse, endured a turbulent marriage and had brushes with death and long periods of personal darkness.

How did faith save him? “I have tried drugs and a little of everything else, and there is nothing in the world more soul-satisfying than having the kingdom of God building inside you and growing,” he said.

She remains grounded in her faith, says she’s “just a workhorse” and sees her life and work as ministry. “I just try to go on, because I know I have to.”
