Jelly Roll was noticeably absent from the 2025 Grammy Awards , despite being nominated in two categories. He didn’t give a reason for not attending, but he’s certainly had a busy schedule. Between touring the country, performing at FireAid , hosting a concert for first responders, and making his acting debut in Fire Country, we now know the “I’m Not Okay” singer is taking on a whole new challenge.

Jelly Roll will be joining American Idol for season 23 in his first role. He has appeared on the singing competition show as a mentor and performer, but this year he will take on the role of Artist in Residence for aspiring contestants.
Jelly Roll shared the news on social media along with a video of himself celebrating with Idol host Ryan Seacrest. He picked Ryan up and spun him around, saying: “I feel like I’m giving them the energy they need. I’m encouraging them and trying to help them move forward.”

Jelly Roll captioned her post: “Got to lift up @ryanseacrest like I would lift up the hopefuls of @americanidol! 🙌 What an honor to be Idol’s FIRST RESIDENT—guided by heart, soul, and real-life experience! 🎤💥 ” Fans commented: “This is amazing! You were amazing last season. Just the news I needed today” and “Awesome! My reason to watch American Idol again! ❤️”
Jelly Roll’s music ranges from hip-hop to rock to country. However, with Luke Bryan and Carrie Underwood as judges, it’s safe to assume the show will have a heavy country influence. The new season of American Idol premieres March 9 on ABC. Jelly Roll will be on the show during Hollywood Week.
