Jelly Roll has won numerous awards for his raw and inspirational lyrics. And now, he’s getting an award not for his impact on the music industry, but for spreading knowledge around the world.
On Tuesday, April 8, the 40-year-old country singer took the stage in Oxford, England. Only this time, it wasn’t to sing a ballad or accept an ACM or CMA Award; it was to receive the prestigious Global Literacy Award at the World Literacy Summit.
The World Literature Foundation — the nonprofit behind the award — works to increase access to books and literacy for children, regardless of circumstances or location. Jelly — who sought knowledge and education while in prison — fits perfectly into their mission.
According to the Summit’s website , Jelly Roll is credited for advocating for “improving basic knowledge in domestic and international justice systems, particularly for young offenders, through educational programs and resources.”

As you may know, Jelly was first incarcerated at the age of 15. After nearly a decade in and out of prison, Jelly used his education behind bars to pave a different path for his future. At 24, he earned his General Educational Development (GED) certificate and cemented his passion and advocacy for education and literacy for prisoners.
