The New York Yankees executed a blockbuster offseason followed by a trade deadline of additional moves, but it wasn’t enough to bring them back to the World Series. Now the team is set to make more significant changes to the roster.
Even after bringing in Jazz Chisholm Jr. at last year’s deadline, cutting ties with Gleyber Torres over the winter, signing Paul Goldschmidt and then trading for Ahmed Rosario, the Yankees’ infield could be set for additional change. When asked if the team might part ways with third baseman Ryan McMahon after bringing him in at this past trade deadline, “Talkin’ Yanks” host Jake Storiale predicted it could happen.
“It’s in play,” Storiale said during a recent episode of the show.
It would be pretty surprising if the Yankees were to cut ties with McMahon so soon after acquiring him, but Storiale urged the team to consider it because McMahon doesn’t offer as much offensive production from the third base spot as he believes the Yankees’ lineup needs.
“I don’t know if there’s more in there, but $16 million for a third baseman that definitely has the glove and you’re not sure what you have with the bat, but he doesn’t fit this current Yankee (lineup),” Storiale said. “He is a luxury piece and the Yankees currently don’t operate in luxury pieces.”
While Storiale acknowledged that it would be nice for the Yankees to have room for McMahon’s Gold Glove Award caliber defense, he feels that carrying an infielder who logged a meager .208 batting average this past season isn’t something the Yankees can afford to do.
And if the front office agrees with his assessment, it could be parting ways with McMahon just a few months after adding him to the mix.
