The Philadelphia Eagles made a move on Wednesday that could signal that they’re sliding fan favorite Cooper DeJean from nickel to outside cornerback opposite Quinyon Mitchell.
Philly traded the New York Jets for cornerback Michael Carter, along with a 2027 seventh-round pick. In return, the Eagles sent wide receiver John Metchie and a 2027 sixth-round pick to New York.
While Carter has some experience outside, most of his snaps have come in the slot. That means the Eagles have the option to move DeJean from inside to outside if they want.
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio told reporters this week that the Eagles had discussed the idea but ultimately chose to keep DeJean at the position he’s way too good at. That was also before the Eagles made their move for Carter.
“We considered it,” Fangio said. “But, when you have one of the better players at a certain position and it’s an important position, where you get involved more. You hate to take a really good player at one position to maybe not be as good a player or impactful of a player at another position. It’s definitely something we’ve talked about.”
Cooper DeJean doesn’t care where he lines up
The Eagles have had trouble locking down a consistent CB2 this season, forcing DeJean to move all over the field.
Ideally, they’d like him to settle into one spot, whether that’s inside or outside, but DeJean has made it clear he’s fine with either.
“I’d play wherever they put me,” DeJean said, via NBC Sports Dave Zangaro. “Obviously, I’ve played a little bit more outside these last few weeks, us being in base more. I feel like I’m getting more and more comfortable out there. But if they put me out there, I feel like I’d have no problem moving outside if that was the case.”
We’ll see what the Eagles decide over their Bye week, but now they really have a big decision to make.
