The greatest player in Virginia Tech women’s basketball history is back. Elizabeth Kitley is returning to Blacksburg to join Megan Duffy’s staff as an assistant to the head coach, the program announced Thursday.

“We are thrilled to welcome Virginia Tech legend Liz Kitley to our staff,” Duffy said in the school’s release. “Liz is one of the most recognizable faces in the region. While we are so proud of her illustrious playing career, we now get to feel her presence in our community outreach, donor and NIL efforts. She will serve as a tremendous role model for our student-athletes on and off the court. We’re excited to have her back to help the Hokies while she also prepares for the next steps with professional basketball.”

Kitley spent the last two years in the WNBA with the Las Vegas Aces, who drafted her with the 24th pick in the 2024 draft, and the Golden State Valkyries. She played in 12 games for the Aces, highlighted by an 11-point, five-rebound, two-steal and two-block performance vs. Seattle on May 25, before being waived in June. She was on the Valkyries’ roster for two contests in September but did not play.

Her playing career isn’t over, though. In her time on the Hokies’ staff, she’s going to continue to work on her craft with the goal of returning to the professional basketball level.

Kitley will help out Tech in a number of ways. She’ll work hand-in-hand with Duffy and general manager Stephen Fishler on community outreach, fundraising and NIL efforts. She’ll also be part of the radio and TV broadcast crew for select home games — both on the Virginia Tech Sports Network alongside Evan Hughes and on ACC Network Extra.

Expanding on the NIL piece, Kitley will help Hokies players develop their personal brands and navigate the ever-changing landscape of college athletics.

In her five-year playing career for the Hokies, she was an All-American, a three-time ACC Player of the Year and four-time All-ACC selection. She holds 14 school records and is Tech’s all-time leading scorer with 2,709 points.
