After being eliminated in the American League Division Series, New York is sure to attempt to make some major offseason additions. Which means they will no doubt be sniffing around many notable free agents this winter. And one could be from a top rival in the AL East.
Toronto Blue Jays two-time All-Star Bo Bichette is expected to be one of the notable free agents on the market this offseason. In a list of the best available in the winter, The Athletic’s Jim Bowden had the Jays’ shortstop sixth. He also listed the “best fits” for him, and interestingly enough, he had the Yankees among the nine teams that could target the young star.

Could the Yankees replace Anthony Volpe with Bo Bichette?
In 2022 and 2023, Anthony Volpe was viewed as the best prospect in the New York Yankees system. He was even seen as among the five best in the entire league. It is part of why the New Jersey native had some suggesting he could be the heir apparent to franchise icon Derek Jeter.
In his rookie season, he struggled at the plate. However, he earned Gold Glove honors, and his 21 homers showed the upside in his bat. In his sophomore season, he didn’t take a notable development step forward, and frustration grew among Yankees fans. His performance at the plate in 2025, and issues on defense did not quiet the doubters. Although his hitting decline midway through the season may have been injury-related.
That is why there are many Yankees fans who would welcome the addition of Bichette. He is close to as good a defender, but the big difference is that Bichette is one of the best-hitting shortstops in the game. The one issue is that he has started to become injury-prone over the last three seasons.
He only took the field in 81 games last year, and missed the last month of the 2025 season and much of the playoffs. While he is far better than Volpe, there certainly is a risk in the signing. Especially since Jim Bowden believes he could land a contract for seven years and worth around $190 million.
