There are only two active WNBA players who’ve had their respective college jerseys retired by the South Carolina women’s basketball program.

Now both of those players will play for the Las Vegas Aces.

The Aces on Saturday announced the signing of South Carolina great Tiffany Mitchell. Mitchell joins her with her old South Carolina teammate, A’ja Wilson, in Sin City.

“I’m super excited about joining the organization and being in such elite company,” Mitchell said in a news release. “I also couldn’t pass up playing with A’ja again at this point in her career, so I’m just thankful to have the opportunity with her and this team.”

Mitchell is a nine-year WNBA veteran. Her pro career started in 2016 after she was drafted No. 9 overall by the Indiana Fever. Mitchell earned All-Rookie honors that year.

She spent seven seasons with the Fever before playing with the Minnesota Lynx for the 2023 season. Mitchell’s 2024 campaign with the Connecticut Sun was cut short after missing the second half of the season while recovering from sepsis and abdominal issues.

Mitchell has since recovered and is competing in the Israeli D1 League, where she is averaging 17.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.

“Tiffany Mitchell is an electric guard with excellent court vision who can play both ends of the court,” Aces president Nikki Fargas said in the news release. “She will add depth and veteran leadership to our already talented group of guards, and I’m excited to see what she will do in Las Vegas.”Picture background

The former Gamecock was in Columbia from 2012 to 2016. She was three-time All-American, two-time SEC Player of the Year and three-time All-SEC first team selection. Mitchell played a key role in taking South Carolina to its first Final Four in 2015. Her No. 25 jersey was retired in 2023.Picture background

Mitchell and Wilson overlapped for two seasons at South Carolina during the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons.
