Xavier Worthy sat out two straight games for the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this season after he suffered an injury in their Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. The second-year wide receiver collided with teammate Travis Kelce in the first drive of the new season, which resulted in a dislocated right shoulder.
Worthy worked his way back and was able to return in Week 4 to help the Chiefs secure a 37-20 win over the Baltimore Ravens. In five games played this season, the former Texas Longhorns star has registered 16 catches for 180 receiving yards and one touchdown. He’s also rushed six times for 66 yards.

Worthy played his part in Kansas City’s most recent win. On Sunday, the Chiefs dominated their AFC West rivals, the Las Vegas Raiders, in a 31-0 shutout. Worthy did not score a touchdown, but he was able to log three receptions for 35 yards, along with 13 rushing yards on one carry.
In a video posted by the Chiefs on social media, a mic’d-up Worthy can be seen talking about his in-game celebrations against Vegas. This included the 6-7 gesture, which has emerged as a highly popular meme and slang term among kids. Chris Jones was also in the video as he busted out Worthy’s celebration from his return game against the Ravens. There was a bit of discussion about the new celebration, which caught the team’s attention.
“What should we start calling this celly? 😂” the Chiefs posted on X.
According to Worthy, the celebration was impromptu. He said he didn’t know what to do as he celebrated against the Ravens, which resulted in him inventing a new gesture on the fly. It appears to have caught on, with Jones also trying out the celebration in their last game.
Worthy responded to the Chiefs’ question about the unnamed celebration. The 22-year-old announced that the move will henceforth be called “The Chief Wave.” The team caught wind of Worthy’s declaration, which they have now approved.
Worthy will get a chance to bust out his newly named celebration in Kansas City’s next game. They will be back in action in Week 8 against the Washington Commanders in a “Monday Night Football” showdown. The Chiefs will host the game at Arrowhead Stadium with kickoff scheduled at 8:15 p.m. ET.
