Roughly three million Americans canceled their Disney+ accounts in September, subscription analytics firm Antenna said on Monday, Oct. 20. Disney-owned Hulu also saw about 4.1 million cancellations in the month.

The share of users who canceled Disney+, also called the “churn rate,” jumped from 4% in August to 8% in September. Hulu’s churn rate also doubled from 5% to 10% in the same time period.

The spike came after ABC suspended Kimmel on Wednesday, Sept. 17, following his remarks about right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk’s killing. Critics said the sidelining was an effort to appease longtime Kimmel critic President Donald Trump, along with conservative-leaning local TV news giants Nexstar Media Group and Sinclair Broadcast Group.

Outraged viewers led a massive boycott, urging others to cancel Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions. SiriusXM host Howard Stern was among the many high-profile subscribers to drop Disney+ over his friend’s suspension.

A Disney source told The Hollywood Reporter that Antenna’s numbers “appear higher than Disney’s internal data” and that it’s unclear how upgrades or downgrades are counted in the firm’s metrics. The source also noted that the cancellations quickly subsided, and that many users who cancel often return quietly.

Disney+ and Hulu are also facing turbulence outside the Kimmel fiasco.

Days after the “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” host was pulled from the air, Disney+ announced price hikes for its service and bundles, which begin on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Hulu will also be phased out in the US and be fully integrated into Disney+ by 2026.

Kimmel’s first episode after his suspension smashed ratings records, drawing 6.26 million TV viewers and more than 22 million YouTube views for his opening monologue.
