The Philadelphia Eagles do not look like a team that just won a Super Bowl in February, and many, including Lane Johnson, are pointing fingers at first-year offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo.
Following the Eagles’ embarrassing 34-17 loss to the New York Giants on Thursday Night Football, Johnson told reports that the offense, including himself, is too predictable and stale.
“I feel like we’ve been very stagnant offensively, and we put the defense in a bind, really past two, three weeks, Johnson said.
The Eagles can’t seem to get in sync and have started strongly over the last two games before completely collapsing in the second half. While Johnson has thrown Patullo under the bus, quarterback Jalen Hurts blames himself.
“You don’t look at it that way—not as a quarterback,” Hurts said about predictability. “You know, you got so many opportunities in the game to take advantage of it.”
Patullo Was Supposed to Be the Easier Transition for Hurts
The Eagles’ biggest change they made this offseason was when they swapped out Kellen Moore for Patullo as Hurts’ new offensive coordinator.
That technically made five offensive coordinators (Doug Pederson (2020), Nick Sirianni/Shane Steichen (2021-2022), Brian Johnson (2023), Kellen Moore (2024), and Patullo) since Hurts entered the NFL in 2020, and at least ten different playcallers for him dating back to high school. That is a lot of change for any quarterback, but Patullo was supposed to be the easier transition.
Hurts was finally getting some consistency since Patullo was promoted from within the organization, moving up from passing game coordinator to offensive coordinator.
It sounded great from the outside looking in, but Hurts appeared to know all along that it didn’t matter who stepped in at OC, things would change anyway.
“He’d have a different role,” Hurts said after finding out Patullo was a candidate to replace Moore. “It’s hard to compare that role to this role because his job is going to demand something totally different from him. I have a lot of confidence in him and what he’s shown; however, over the years I’ve learned that’s something out of my jurisdiction.”
Six weeks into the 2025 season, and fans already want Patullo gone. We’ll see how long Hurts keeps taking the blame before his own frustration kicks in.
