Charles Spencer, the brother of Princess Diana, has found himself opening up about his grief for his sister numerous times.
Over the years, Charles, 61, has been very vocal about his love for his sister. And has even found himself revealing concerns he has about his nephews, Prince William and Prince Harry.
But what exactly has he said about the royal family over the years? Let’s have a look.

Were Diana and her brother close?
Charles and Diana were the youngest siblings in their family, so it’s not too surprising that they grew up fairly close to each other.
Just last month, Charles brought flowers to Diana’s burial site to mark her death anniversary.
And just a few months ago he spoke on Loose Men about what it was really like when his sister died.
Princess Diana’s brother revealed: “For years after Diana died, I would think ‘Oh I must ring her and tell her something’. We shared the same sense of humour. And then you realise, of course, that’s not going to happen.”
But his sister Diana isn’t the only member of the royal family that Charles has spoken about over the years.

Princess Diana’s brother spoke about Prince Harry
Earlier this year, the brother of Princess Diana shared his support for his nephew, Prince Harry.
When Harry reached a settlement in his court case against News Group Newspapers, Charles shared a message of congratulations.
Posting a screenshot of the announcement on Instagram, Charles penned: “It takes an enormous amount of guts to take on major media organisations like this. And incredible tenacity to win against them.
“It’s wonderful that Harry also secured an apology for his mother – she would be immensely touched by this, I’m sure. And also rightly proud.”

Charles ‘warned’ Prince Harry over surname changes
It was reported that Prince Harry was considering using his mother’s surname.
But it was then reported that Charles actually encouraged Harry not to take his mum’s surname.
The source said: “They had a very amicable conversation and Spencer advised him against taking such a step.”

Charles gave his opinion on Prince William and Harry’s ‘rift’
In September 2024, Charles made a rare comment about both of his nephews, amid their reported rift.
As he welcomed members of Rock Choir to Althorp House, he spoke about his pride that Diana’s influence continues. And also mentioned Prince William and Harry.
However, he opted to not say anything too controversial, simply making it clear that it was Diana’s legacy that “really matters in this situation”.
He told ITV at the time: “They both recognise this is something of their mother’s and they both support that. That is all that really matters in this situation.”

He hit out at royal family over Diana’s funeral
Back in 2017, Princess Diana’s brother actually claimed he had been lied to about his sister’s funeral.
Speaking on Radio 4’s Today Programme, he slammed the decision for Harry and William to follow the coffin.
He said it was a “bizarre and cruel thing” for the princes to do.
Speaking about the decision for William and Harry, who were just 15 and 12 at the time, to walk behind their mother’s coffin, Charles added: “I was liaising with some courtier at Buckingham Palace and he mentioned it and I said of course not, of course they are not going to do that, and he said it had been decided.
“I said she [Diana] just would not want them to do this and there was lots of sort of embarrassed coughing and various other conversations.
“Then eventually I was lied to and told that they wanted to do it, which of course they didn’t, but I didn’t realise that.”
Many called him out for making “jabs” at the family during his funeral speech. But he didn’t agree.
Charles said: “I wasn’t looking to make any jabs at anyone actually. I was trying to celebrate Diana and if by doing that it showed up particularly by the press, I think, in a bad way, they had it coming.”

He admitted he didn’t see his nephews enough
In 2002, Charles hit out at the royal family in an interview with the Guardian.
He did not reveal exactly how much he saw his nephews, but made it clear it wasn’t a lot.
Charles revealed: “What I can say is that they may not be encouraged to stay in touch with their mother’s side of the family.”
At the time, a spokesman for St James’s Palace declined to comment, saying: “We consider that to be a private family matter.”

Charles addressed Kate Middleton conspiracies
In March 2024, Kate Middleton revealed she had been diagnosed with cancer. But in the months prior, there had been a lot of conspiracy theories regarding where exactly she was.
Speaking to the BBC, Earl Spencer admitted these were more “dangerous” back when Diana was alive.
He said at the time: “I think it was more dangerous back in the day.”
But he also showed his support for Princess Kate by sharing a screenshot of the royal from her cancer announcement video onto his own Instagram Stories.
