We, the people, have been theorizing about every single song on Taylor Swift’s new album, The Life of a Showgirl, and the consensus on “Actually Romantic“? It’s a Charli xcx diss track. However.
Per Page Six, fans found lyrical “proof” that the song could also be about Kim Kardashian, or at least include a reference to her. Obviously, Kim and Taylor have longstanding beef the contents of which could fill a novel. But remember back in 2018? When Kim hopped online and wrote “I decided for this Valentine’s Day everyone deserves a Valentine. So I’m going to send them to my lovers, to my haters, to everyone that I think of because it’s Valentine’s Day after all” ?!?!?
She included a group of post-it notes, prominently featuring Taylor Swift’s name:
Cut to “Actually Romantic,” which includes the lyric “But you keep sending me funny valentines / And I know you think it comes off vicious / But it’s precious, adorable.”
I mean…it could be about Kim! But honestly, the song has a lot more references that are clearly Charli xcx coded, so fans’ original theory probably stands. Plus, let’s not forget that Taylor already devoted a diss track to Kim called “thanK you aIMee.”
Either way, Taylor explained the meaning of “Actually Romantic” to Amazon Music, saying it’s “a song about realizing that someone else has kind of had a one-sided, adversarial relationship with you that you didn’t know about.”
She added, “And all of a sudden they start doing too much and they start letting you know that actually, you’ve been living in their head rent-free and you had no idea. It’s presenting itself as them sort of resenting you or having a problem with you but you take that and just accept it as love and you accept it as attention and affection, and how flattering that somebody has made you such a big part of their reality when you didn’t even think about this.”
