The Los Angeles Dodgers rostered Will Smith for the National League Wild Card Series against the Cincinnati Reds, but he did not play. He was a potential bat off the bench in the series, but Roberts was less confident in his ability to catch in the last round.
However, facing the Philadelphia Phillies presents a new challenge for the Dodgers. The Phillies are likely going to be a tougher matchup for the Dodgers, and having Will Smith would be a game-changer. Dave Roberts just revealed in what capacity he would be available this series.
“Dave Roberts said Will Smith will be available to catch in (NLDS),” Dodgers insider David Vassegh wrote on X. “Wouldn’t say if he would start Game 1.”
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – SEPTEMBER 20: Injured catcher Will Smith #16 of the Los Angeles Dodgers, with his right hand in a brace, walks off the field… |
Smith is one of the best catchers in baseball, and having his bat in the lineup adds to an already great offense. He was named an All-Star for the third consecutive season this year. He hit .296 with a .901 OPS.
While he may be available, there is no telling how his hand injury will impact him when he returns. He has not played since Sept. 9 after suffering a hairline fracture in his right hand. Not even a full month since the injury, he is trying to play and give his team everything he has for a chance to win another World Series.
The Dodgers’ lineup will be one to watch before the teams face off on Saturday. If Smith is healthy and able to start, it could make things difficult for the Phillies.
