The Indianapolis Colts (3-1) return to Lucas Oil Stadium for NFL Week 5 action against the Las Vegas Raiders (1-3). The Colts are coming off their first loss of the season, 27-20 to the Los Angeles Rams. The Raiders have struggled since winning their opener, falling 25-24 to the Chicago Bears in Week 4 as their last-second field goal try was blocked.
Here are the keys to the Week 5 matchup.
Colts vs. Raiders: Keys to the Week 5 matchup
- Despite losing their third straight game, the Raiders made notable improvements in Week 4. They kept quarterback Geno Smith clean after allowing 12 sacks over the first three games. Las Vegas rushed for 240 yards after failing to reach 100 in any of the first three games.
- Red zone possessions should be interesting: Las Vegas is No. 21 in scoring touchdowns when reaching the opponent’s 20-yard line (50%), while the Colts are the worst defensively (allowing TDs 88.9% of the time). Indy’s offense has sputtered in the red zone (47.5%, No. 25) while Las Vegas’ defense has been stout (39.5%, No. 4).
- The Colts continue to hum offensively: No. 5 in scoring (30.8 points per game), No. 3 in yards (397.3), No. 4 in completion percentage (71.9) and No. 4 in protecting quarterback Daniel Jones (sacks on 3.2% of dropbacks).
Raiders vs. Colts matchups to watch
Ashton Jeanty vs. Colts linebackers
The rookie running back had a breakout in Week 4, rushing for 138 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown, earning the weekly honor as the NFL’s top running back. He has increased his rushing total with each game and has 282 yards with 2 touchdowns. The Colts will try to squelch his upward trend.
Geno Smith vs. Colts defensive backs
The veteran quarterback leads the NFL with 7 interceptions, throwing 3 in Week 4. (He also has 948 passing yards and 6 TDs.) Raiders coach Pete Carroll defended Smith over questions of a possible benching. The Colts allowed 375 passing yards in Week 4 as the Rams took advantage of their battered defensive backfield. Does Smith bounce back?
Maxx Crosby vs. Colts offensive line
The veteran defensive end had a stellar Week 4, with 3 tackles for loss, a forced fumble and his first career interception. If the Colts are missing right guard Matt Goncalves again, Crosby could create headaches. Of course, Crosby has created headaches against fully healthy O-lines.
