The Green Bay Packers lost rookie offensive tackle Brant Banks on waivers to the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday. Banks, who spent one week on the team’s 53-man roster, was waived by the Packers on Tuesday, and the Titans claimed him off waivers a day after, per Aaron Wilson.
Signed as an undrafted free agent out of Rice, Banks spent all of training camp with the Packers and performed well at left tackle during the preseason, leading to a spot on the practice squad to start the regular season. The Packers elevated Banks to the gameday roster for Week 2 and then signed him to the 53-man roster before Week 4 after three offensive linemen suffered injuries and couldn’t play in Dallas.
With five players eligible to return from the PUP list or injured reserve after four weeks, the Packers released Banks on Tuesday to clear a roster spot. More than likely, the team wanted him back on the practice squad. But waiving him and exposing a young offensive lineman to waivers was a risk, and the Titans — who are dealing with injuries at tackle — were free to claim him on Wednesday.
The Packers have two open spots on the 53-man roster.
As of Wednesday, the Packers have only two offensive linemen on the practice squad: veteran guard/center Lecitus Smith and rookie Dalton Cooper.
