Las Vegas Raiders standout left tackle Kolton Miller is heading to the injured reserve after an ankle injury he suffered late in the team’s loss to the Chicago Bears on Sunday proved to be worse than initially expected, according to multiple reports Tuesday.
A high-ankle sprain was the expected diagnosis for Miller, which was confirmed by an MRI. But a CT scan also revealed a hairline fracture, and given the recovery time needed for his injuries, Miller will be placed on injured reserve. The news was first reported by NFL Media.
Miller, 29, signed a three-year, $66 million extension in the summer, including $42.5 million guaranteed. Prior to the extension, Miller was slated to enter the final year of his contract in 2025.
Miller had an uneven 2024 after a shoulder injury in 2023 cost him four games and required offseason surgery, but he’s generally been a good, consistent player for the Raiders since they drafted him in the first round in 2018. In seven years, Miller missed only seven games, but Sunday’s injury will shelve him for the foreseeable future.
Miller helped rookie running back Ashton Jeanty have a breakout performance against the Bears, with the 2025 first-round pick racking up 138 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries. Jeanty also added a couple of touchdowns through the air.
On Monday, Raiders head coach Pete Carroll said that veteran tackle Stone Forsythe would be in the mix to replace Miller. Carroll drafted Forsythe in the sixth round in 2021 when he was with the Seattle Seahawks. Forsythe has made 14 career starts, with 13 occurring over the past two seasons.
