New details are emerging in the case of the former University of Kentucky cheerleader whose newborn was found dead in a trash bag in her off-campus apartment.
On Aug. 31, four days after giving birth, Laken Snelling, 21, was arrested after someone found the dead baby in her closet and called 911. Snelling, a senior at the time, was charged with abuse of a corpse, tampering with physical evidence and concealing the birth of an infant. She has pleaded not guilty.
At about 4 a.m. on Aug. 27, Snelling allegedly gave birth to a boy that fell onto the floor of her bedroom, the affidavit says, WLKY reports.
Snelling told authorities that she was awake for about 30 minutes before she passed out, the affidavit alleges.
When she awoke, the baby boy was “turning blue and purple,” leading her to believe the baby was dead, according to the affidavit.
She wrapped the baby up “like a burrito and laid it on the floor next to her because it gave her a little comfort in the moment,” according to the affidavit.
She apparently fell asleep again and woke up at 7:30 a.m. when her alarm went off, the affidavit says, LEX 18 reports.
She placed the baby in the towel and the placenta in a black trash bag and put it in her closet, according to the affidavit.
Her roommates said they had heard a loud noise around 4 a.m. More than four hours later, Snelling told them she passed out and fell, causing the loud noise, the affidavit alleges.
After that, she allegedly told police she left her apartment, skipped her 9:30 a.m. class, sat in her car, ordered food on the McDonald’s app and picked it up.
She went to the student clinic, but did not go inside, the affidavit alleges.
While she was gone, her roommates went into Snelling’s room and found a “blood-soaked towel on the floor and a plastic bag containing evidence of childbirth,” the affidavit says, LEX 18 reports.
The caller said the baby was “cold to the touch,” according to an incident report obtained by Fox 56.
She returned to her apartment at about 10:30 a.m., where she was met by police.
She was taken to the police department, then taken to a local hospital for treatment after asking to be “checked out” medically, according to an arrest citation reviewed by PEOPLE.

On Sept. 2, Snelling appeared in court where she entered a not guilty plea to the charges.
She returned to court on Friday, Sept. 26, where she waived her right to a preliminary hearing, allowing a grand jury to be empaneled and weigh whether to indict her.
Snelling has been ordered to remain on house arrest in the interim. Her attorney did not respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
