Breaking Down the Hype: Did Micah Parsons Actually Record 10 Pressures Against Dallas?tl

Green Bay Packers defensive end Micah Parsons was credited by Pro Football Focus with a season-high 10 pressures during Sunday night’s 40-40 tie with the Dallas Cowboys.

PFF defines a pressure as anything from a hurry to a quarterback hit to a sack. They all count as pressures. Parsons finished with one sack, two quarterback hits and seven hurries in his return to Dallas. While a sack and quarterback hit are straight forward metrics, a hurry can be a bit subjective. Any pass-rush that forces a quarterback to throw quickly to avoid a sack or hit or any disruption that forces a quarterback out of the pocket or on the run can be correctly defined as a hurry.

So, did Parsons really have 10 pressures against the Cowboys? Let’s dive into the tape of Parsons’ 30 pass-rushing snaps to see if we can find what PFF charted.

1. 3:31, first quarter: Our first pressure. Parsons easily shook off a chip attempt from slot receiver Jalen Tolbert and then beat left tackle Tyler Guyton clean with an outside move. He was closing in on Dak Prescott when he got the ball away quick with a short checkdown.

2. 5:50, second quarter: Parsons immediately beat Guyton with an inside swim move and hit Prescott a half-second after he got the ball away. The Cowboys were playing with fire having Prescott throw from his own 5-yard line while Parsons was 1-on-1 with Guyton.

3. 0:54, second quarter: Parsons crossed over left guard Tyler Smith, had a clean run at the quarterback and once again hit Prescott a half-second after he went deep to George Pickens, who made a circus catch for 28 yards, setting up a touchdown.

4. 8:54, fourth quarter: Another immediate win vs. Guyton and only Smith’s last second block attempt kept Parsons from creating a big-time hit and likely forcing a fumble on Prescott on third down. Parsons still almost got the ball, and his heavy pressure forced a quick, panicked throw that fell incomplete.

5. 7:06, fourth quarter: The Cowboys assigned three blockers to Parsons, and he still ended up hurrying Prescott into a throw while chasing him outside the pocket. Karl Brooks’ pressure blew up the play initially and Parsons’ hustle and relentlessness ended it (although Brooks was flagged for facemask).

6. 1:38, fourth quarter: Parsons took on a double team for the duration of the play but still he ended up in Prescott’s face and sightline, and Prescott eventually made a panicked throwaway (that probably should have been flagged for grounding).

7. 0:50, fourth quarter: Parsons nearly wrecked another big play. He immediately won his 1-on-1 battle with the right tackle and was closing in on Prescott when he threw quick to his left to Pickens, who made a man miss and scored a 28-yard touchdown. Parsons gave Prescott a nice little hit just as he threw the football.

8. 7:17, overtime: The Cowboys really took a risk by running a boot action to Parsons’ side, and he predictably blew up the play almost immediately, forcing Prescott to make a hurried, jumping throw to the flat for a short gain.

9. 6:43, overtime: The Cowboys had two blockers on Parsons for the whole rep, but he eventually shook free and likely would have sacked Prescott had he not been held for a half-second at the most important point of the rep. Prescott was within reach but the brief hold kept Parsons from making the play, and Prescott escaped and made a crazy throw downfield for 34 yards. A sack would have had the Cowboys in third-and-long in overtime.

10. 5:33, overtime: A game-saving play from Parsons, who beat the block of the tight end on the backside of the play and used his rare speed to chase down the quarterback. Prescott was starting to scramble to his left and likely would have scored a touchdown had it not been Parsons chasing from the backside. His sprawling tackle limited the play to no gain and counted as a sack; the Cowboys settled for a field goal after failing on third down.

And there’s the 10. Two other snaps were noted as near pressures, but Prescott either got rid of the ball before Parsons won or Parsons was picked up at the last second by a secondary blocker. On one snap, Parsons lined up over the center, won immediately but couldn’t get through the running back in time to disrupt the pass.

Watching Parsons’ 30 pass-rushing snaps was an incredible experiment. The review showed just how much attention the Cowboys paid him on most snaps, usually with two blockers but sometimes even three throughout the rep. And it also showed why he received so much attention, because he was devastatingly effective Parsons in every single 1-on-1 opportunity. There wasn’t a blocker on the field who could handle him in a 1-on-1 and traditional dropback situation.

Credit Prescott and the Cowboys for mitigating Parsons’ impact with quick, on-time throws. On several of the Cowboys’ biggest plays, Parsons was in position to make a game-changing play or prevent a big play but Prescott got rid of the ball just in time. Sometimes, a great quarterback just has the answers. Parsons admitted as much post-game.

Any one questioning Parsons’ impact or production from Sunday night just needs to put on the tape. It has all the answers. Did Parsons have 10 pressures against the Cowboys? No question. If took an incredible performance from Prescott under pressure to prevent Parsons from a truly memorable homecoming in primetime.
