Jimmy Butler’s move to the Golden State Warriors marked one of the biggest acquisitions of the 2024-25 NBA season. He was traded from the Miami Heat to the Warriors at the February deadline in a complex five-team deal after reports of a dispute with the Heat’s front office. The move immediately gave the Warriors another battle-tested star to support Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
After joining Golden State, Butler declined his player option and later signed a two-year, $121 million contract extension. Butler closed out the 2024-25 season averaging 17.9 points, 5.9 assists and 5.5 rebounds in 30 games for the Warriors, shooting 47.6% from the field.
In a limited sample with Golden State, his defensive presence and ability to orchestrate the offense helped stabilize a roster that had been struggling for consistency before his arrival. As he prepares for his first full season with the team, expectations are that Butler can bring more balance and edge to a Warriors group that hasn’t advanced past the second round of the playoffs since 2022.
While Warriors fans eagerly anticipate what Butler will deliver on the court, the six-time All-Star made headlines this weekend for an off-court project. Ahead of training camp, Butler revealed that he will be featured in the upcoming Battlefield video game, with a trailer set to be released on Sunday.
“I put the team on my back. And a rocket on my shoulder. See the @battlefield Live Action Trailer starring me this Sunday,” Butler captioned a video ad shared on his official Instagram handle.
This is not the first time Butler has ventured into entertainment during the offseason. Last year, he appeared in a Fall Out Boy music video, and has continued to engage with pop culture outside of basketball.
Butler is also one of several NBA stars who have also made the leap into games and media: Tyrese Haliburton and Jalen Brunson appeared in WWE 2K25, Damian Lillard was featured in WWE Battlegrounds, James Harden popped up in FIFA 18, while LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo have all appeared in Fortnite.
On the court, Butler will hope to help Golden State replicate last season’s late surge. Following the Butler trade, the Warriors went 23-7 to close the season, eventually advancing to the second round of the NBA playoffs.
The Dubs enter the season with a talented but thin roster, with just nine active players signed as of late September. The trio of Curry, Green, and Butler gives the team proven experience, but questions remain about depth, especially if injuries strike.
