Mitchell Robinson has become one of the Knicks’ most important pieces. The true anchor of the Knicks’ defense, Robinson has seen his role change as time has gone on.

Notably, Robinson has been slowed down severely in recent years due to injuries. Additionally, the Knicks have since added Karl-Anthony Towns — who plays the same position as Robinson — as a result, Robinson has become more of a backup big man rather than a consistent starter.

In the past, Robinson has come off the bench briefly upon returning from injury in order to get him back up to speed. However, that role has become more of a constant in recent seasons. Last season, Robinson appeared in just 17 games, but 14 of those came off the bench.

Robinson’s role could change once again in 2026

Now with Mike Brown in the fold instead of Tom Thibodeau, Robinson’s role for next season remains unknown. Nonetheless, Robinson told Kristian Winfield of the New York Daily News that he is ready for any role he’s placed in next season.

“Nah. It don’t matter to me at all,” Robinson said. “I started before. I came off the bench before. I did great in both. So it’s whatever.”

Some have suggested starting Robinson in place of Josh Hart in order to maximize the Knicks’ ability to protect the rim, as Karl-Anthony Towns is one of the league’s worst rim protectors. Opponents of the idea have worried about the team’s center depth behind Robinson.

Whether he’s coming off the bench, or starting, Robinson figures to be a key component to a Knicks team that is looking to snap their 52-year title drought in 2026.
