After a silent game, A.J. Brown drops a mysterious message — does this signal trouble in Philly?TL

The Philadelphia Eagles are off to their third 4-0 start over the past four seasons, with their most recent victory coming against the previously undefeated Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Florida heat, 31-25. While the Eagles are winning games, it’s possible not everyone is happy.

Wide receiver A.J. Brown caught just two passes for 7 yards on Sunday. It marked his third game this season having under 30 yards receiving. Brown is regarded as a top-five wide receiver in the NFL, but he’s not seeing the targets necessary to put up the numbers other stars do. That’s why it’s notable that Brown posted a cryptic Bible verse on social media following the Eagles’ win.

Brown posted Mark 6:11: “If you’re not welcomed, not listened to, quietly withdraw. Don’t make a scene. Shrug your shoulders and be on your way.”

If you’d like another version of this verse, here’s the NIV: “And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, leave that place and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”

Maybe Brown is just reading through this chapter in his Bible study. Or it could have a deeper meaning related to his current situation.

Brown’s truth regarding the offense

In front of the microphone, Brown has said the right things regarding how the offense has been operating and how his performance has been through four games. He has under 10 yards receiving in two of the four games and has just one catch of 25-plus yards this season.

The Eagles had a stretch on offense on Sunday in which they ran 26 plays for a grand total of 14 yards to open the second half.

The week prior? The offense had a stretch in which they had 14 plays for just three yards.

This offense, at times, looks stale and unimaginative.

“I was saying, ‘Let’s not continue to hit our head on the wall and see if it’s gonna work,'” Brown said last week when discussing the offense — days before he posted the social media messages, of course. “Let’s mix it up and do what we need to do. That’s what I mean.”

The Eagles have certainly struggled on offense with their star players this season. Saquon Barkley is ranked 42nd out of 48 running backs in yards per carry (3.1). Brown and DeVonta Smith aren’t in the top-50 in receiving yards. Hurts is 23rd out of 31 quarterbacks in yards per attempt (6.0). Yet this group averages 23.8 offensive points per game, 11th in the NFL.

Teams are stopping the rushing attack because the pass game isn’t going downfield enough. The Eagles are last in the NFL percentage of plays that go 10+ yards (12.0%) and last in avoiding tackles on run plays (8.4%).

Brown isn’t getting the ball deep, as Hurts was 0 for 3 on throws of 25+ air yards on Sunday. No one on the Eagles offense is getting explosive plays in the pass game, which is an opportunity to get the run game — the Eagles’ bread and butter — going.

“We have to help him (Barkley) out as well, get the passing game going to help the run game,” Brown said earlier this week. “Last year, it was kind of like the opposite. So now we have to do the opposite. We gotta take advantage of what he have.”

This is more than just the numbers in the box score.

Any tension brewing?

If we’ve learned anything about Brown over the past few years, it’s that he doesn’t just post on social media for zero reason. And even if Philly is undefeated and coming off a Super Bowl win, you can’t blame a player of his talent for being frustrated: in four games, Brown has caught 14 passes for 151 yards and one touchdown. He’s averaging just 37.7 yards per game.

The offense isn’t where anyone on the Eagles wants it to be. This isn’t just a matter of Brown not getting the ball, but how the pass catchers are getting the ball and the ways they can be schemed up. This question will persist until the Eagles get out of constant dry spells on offense, which has happened in all four games so far.

Brown declined to speak in the locker room after Sunday’s win, but he’ll likely talk this week when the Eagles get back to Philadelphia. Hurts is looking at things differently, as the Eagles are still looking to reach their standard.

“I think we’re in a good place now, no different because we have a lot of opportunity in front of us, and so we’re looking at the standard of execution,” Hurts said after Sunday’s win, via a team transcript. “You guys may look at the record and say, well… be hound for negativity in some regard.

“Regardless of where you are, when you’re this early in the season you’re still searching to try and elevate and play to a standard and play to a standard of execution and so great opportunity in front of us as a team to continue to build, continue to grow, have a desire to learn and support the collective of what we do.”
