Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton are both style icons in their own right, although the sister-in-laws have slightly different approaches to royal fashion. While Kate tends to favor princess-approved dress coats and jewel tones, the Suits alum has been embracing a more neutral palette with quiet-luxury-coded pieces. However, there was an unexpected sartorial Sussex-Wales crossover at the 2025 Invictus Games on Sunday as Meghan stepped out in a chic menswear piece that looked nearly identical to a distinct jacket trend that Kate–and the late Princess Diana–both wore in the past.
As the Duchess of Sussex and Prince Harry watched an Invictus Games competition on February 9–a wheelchair basketball match between the USA and Nigeria–the American Riviera Orchard founder leaned into a tailored office-ready aesthetic. Markle went classic with a navy blue knit sweater paired with dark slacks and a statement slate gray blazer from one of her new favorite designers, the California-based, women-designed DÔEN. The subtle plaid print of the English tweed Duccio jacket was offset with burgundy accents around the neck, structured lapels, and buttons running down the front and along the sleeves.
Markle showed off a pair of stud earrings by wearing her dark brown hair in an effortless ponytail, while her face-framing curtain bangs accentuated her minimal glowy makeup look with dark mascara and a subtle nude lip.
The With Love, Meghan star’s blazer looked almost identical to a Smythe blazer that Princess Kate wore during a visit to Essex back in 2018. Like Meghan’s look, Middleton’s jacket–which she paired with a black turtleneck sweater and jeans–featured the same dark accent along the neckline, the same lapel style, and the same dark gray tweed print.
It’s possible that both Meghan and Kate took inspiration from Princess Diana, who originated the look back in 1984 during a hospital visit. At the time, Diana made an appearance at Dr. Barnardo’s Charity in London wearing a similar English tweed gray coat with a black collar and black buttons. However, both Kate and Meghan put a modern spin on Princess Di’s long coat by going for a cropped version.
